Help Us Help You!

We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter.  We wish we could include them all.  Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:

  • Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar.  We're sure to find it.  Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
  • We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
  • Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two.  Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
  • It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it.  It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
  • Feel free to include a link for more information!
  • Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute.  As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
  • Over 4,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing.  You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event!  (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Greetings! ,

From the Executive Director

Here we are again - twice in a week!  (Don't get used to it).  The reason we are back so soon is that there is so much going on!  In this issue we report on the opening reception of our exhibition at the Luzerne County courthouse and then highlight a varied and exciting menu of events in this place where "there's nothing to do."  (Yeah, right.)

So let's get ON with it!

Mike Burnside

ps: Don't forget to list your event on the ArtScene Calendar at WVIA.  Instructions are on the left, as always.
Inspired by the Susquehanna Winners and Reception Redux

Our third annual juried art exhibition opened with a delightful reception at the courthouse last Friday.  Click HERE to see a brief slide show.

And the winners are:

Honorable Mention - Works on Paper: Tom Raski for Breslau Bridge
Best in Category: Natalia Kerr for Last Light

Honorable Mention - Photography: Jim Landon for Tranquility
Best in Category: Chuck Allabaugh for West Side Story (shown below)
Chuck Allabaugh - West Side Story

Honorable Mention - Painting: Vyacheslav Shevchenko for Reflection
Best in Category: Andrezek Szynal for Susquehanna Landmarks
(Note: This is an exquisitely textured painting in the pointillism style.  Soon after it was hung, we noticed that people kept walking up and touching it.  I put up a sign - "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH" - but it didn't work.  We finally had to rope it off!)

Best in Show: Brian Keeler for Solstice River Clouds.  This is a wonderful work that captures the elusive, ethereal light and character of of the river by a Wyalusing artist whose every work is an inspiration in the best sense of the word.

The Cultural Council is proud to extend the tradition of art work inspired by the Susquehanna River that dates back to Benjamin West and Jasper Cropsey, and We are pleased to announce that we have obtained a grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts to publish a catalog of the exhibit, believing that it will become an enduring part of the historical record.  Stay tuned.

You still have a chance to see, and BUY, the original art!  The exhibition is open during normal courthouse hours - Mon - Fri - 9am - 4:30 - until November 7th.  Price lists are available in the rotunda.

Special note to our artists:

You must pick up your work at the courthouse on November 8th or 9th, from 2-4pm.

HOWEVER, if you would like to avoid this inconvenience, please consider donating your work to the Wyoming Valley Art League's fundraiser, in which case we will take care of the transfer in your name.  As noted in the article below, the works will be auctioned off, and you may choose to retain 40% of the sale price or donate it back to the Art League.

Here's the scoop from the Art League:

"We are inviting you to participate in this event by contributing a piece of artwork.  Works will be juried into either a silent or live auction by a professional judge. Upon the sale of your work you will receive a 40% commission unless you wish to contribute the commission back to our art league.  We thank you in advance for supporting this important initiative."

If you want to take advantage of this option, you MUST contact the Cultural Council by the end of the day on November 6th by emailing us at cclcarts@gmail.com or calling Mike Burnside at 570-690-2876.  Specify the name of the work as well as your name, address, email address (if you have one) and phone number.

For additional information about all this, including purchasing the works, email cclcarts@gmail.com

Art League #1
HAVE FUN UNDER THE SUN!
The Wyoming Valley Art League is planning a fund raising event on Friday, November 7, 2008, 5-9 p.m. at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.  As the Wyoming Valley Art League celebrates 54 years of providing programs of support to the Fine Arts within our local Valley communities, many community leaders have come to realize that the Art League is a valuable cultural asset to each and every one of the residents of our Great Wyoming Valley.

Art League #2The event will feature an exhibition and live auction of fine art works from various local and nationally known artists.  There will also be food, music, a raffle and silent auction.  Tickets are $30 each.

The Wyoming Valley Art League hosts a spring and fall exhibit and participates in community celebrations such as First and Third Friday and the Fine Arts Fiesta.   Artists also hold workshops and classes in painting, colored pencils, jewelry making and other fine art techniques.  All activities including bus trips are open to the community.

Art League #3Your contribution will enable us to fund a capital campaign so that we may find a permanent space for our art league.  We need this home to continue our work in the arts, and to enrich the beauty of our community through exhibits of local and regional artists, as well as workshops, the Fine Arts Fiesta, guest artists both local and national, children's educational classes, jewelry making, supporting local organizations like Verv Vetue, the Greenhouse, Art for Arts and the Third Friday Art Walk held each month.

The art will be on view at the Mid-Town Gallery until the event at Mohegan Sun.  So stop in tomorrow and get a preview (and buy your tix!).

For more information, please visit the Wyoming Valley Art League web site.

Cider Painters of America at Vgogh

The Cider Painters of America (or CPA) was founded in 1983 in Dallas, Pa. with the idea of creating public awareness and enjoyment of miniature art. It is a group with a light-hearted name and serious purpose. Our group is unique in that we have a size restriction for our work to be smaller than 3" X 5". With this in mind we have become one of the societies with the smallest paintings. We only accept painting medias or other non-traditional medias handled in a painterly way. Our members paint in the tradition of miniaturism following the belief that any subject suitable for a larger work may also be used to create a masterpiece in miniature.

A unique art exhibit representing over 200 artists both locally as well as around the world. Hundreds of original paintings all 3" x 5" and smaller. Meet many of the artists at the exhibit reception on Sunday, October 19th from 2-5 at the Vgogh Gallery, 281 Wyoming Ave in Kingston (across from the Hoyt Library). We plan on having refreshments and a guitarist during the reception.

We are also on the gallery walk this Friday night in case you can't make the Sunday Opening.

THE SORDONI ART GALLERY PRESENTS THE EXHIBITION A New Paradigm: Recent Work by Ron Ehrlich

The Sordoni Art Gallery will open the exhibition, A New Paradigm: Recent Work by Ron Ehrlich on Friday, October 17, with an opening reception on Friday, October 17, from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with Wilkes-Barre's Third Friday Celebration.   The exhibition will be on view through Friday, December 12, 2008.

This exhibition features paintings by American painter Ron Ehrlich.  Ron Ehrlich is known for achieving rich surfaces and subtleties of tone melding the techniques of vessel-making with the spontaneity and vitality of action painting.  Working on panel, wielding a blowtorch as well as a brush, the brilliant colorist creates an art both vigorous and contemplative.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1954, Ron Ehrlich received his BFA from Connecticut College in 1976.  In 1979, he traveled to Japan to the Joji Yamasita monastery to study the art of Bizen pottery making.  Intending to stay for five weeks, he stayed for five years.  He returned to the US and studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Rhode Island School of Design.  Ehrlich applied expertise in the techniques of three-dimensional work to two-dimensional painting resulting in a remarkable and unique body of work.
