Help Us Help You!
We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter. We wish we could include them all. Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:
- Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar. We're sure to find it. Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
-
We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
-
Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two. Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
-
It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it. It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
-
Feel free to include a link for more information!
-
Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute. As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
-
Over 4,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing. You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event! (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

From the Executive Director The good news is that it's been a VERY busy month! The bad news is that it's been too long since I've sent out a newsletter.
I had no idea what a big deal it is to put on an art exhibition! The essential details are below, but there's more to be said.
The exhibition, you will note in the article below, is in the Luzerne County Courthouse - a BEAUTIFUL building about to celebrate it's centennial. The exhibition is in the rotunda, which has marble walls. Have you ever tried to hang a picture on a marble wall? Probably not. It's a challenge, to say the least. But I'm happy to say that all 29 of these wonderful works are all ready for your viewing pleasure, thanks to the assistance of Mark, of the buildings & grounds department, my new best friend. In all seriousness, the courthouse staff have been wonderfully supportive, and I rather think they like the look of this diverse collection of art. We received MANY comments from all manner of people, and it was particularly interesting to hear the reactions. I learned a lesson - NEVER try to predict whether someone will like, or not like, a work of art!
You will also note that the opening reception is on Friday (tomorrow), from 4:30 - 7:30. We will have light refreshments and entertainment by Giselle Pedraza, a marvelous young harp player. She will be interrupted briefly at around 5:30 for the awarding of prizes for best in each category and best in show. There will be a few thank-you's and introductions.
What I am most looking forward to is the opportunity to meet many of you and talk with you about what the Cultural Council should be doing to promote the arts and culture in the county. We have our own ideas on that, of course, but we need YOUR input.
There are two WVIA ArtScene interviews about "Inspired by the Susquehanna" that you may find interesting. (I ALWAYS find Erika Funke's interviews interesting!) Airing today at 11am, Erika talks with CCLC Board Chairperson, Shelley Pearce and I about the show, and last week, she talked with Diane Czajkowski about her work, one of which is in the show. Tomorrow's interview will be posted to their "juke box" by the middle of the afternoon, so if you miss it at 11, you can hear BOTH of them by visiting the ArtScene archives. (Click on that.)
Last, ALL IMAGES ARE FOR SALE! Price lists will be available and the entire amount goes to the artist. In the article below are a few teasers, but you have to see the real thing!
I promise it won't be too long before I return to our regular newsletter schedule, because autumn is upon us and there's a lot happening! In the meantime, please visit the WVIA ArtScene Events Calendar for the broadest listing of cultural events in the region over the next couple of weeks.
We remind all venues to post their events to the calendar. It's easy - all you have to do is go to the Events Submission page and put in your stuff!
Back soon, promise! Mike Burnside |
Third Annual Art Exhibition
The
Cultural Council of Luzerne County is pleased to announce the
opening celebration for the Third Annual Juried Art Exhibition,
"Inspired by the Susquehanna" on Friday, October 10th, from 4:30 to
7:30pm. The exhibition will be held in the Rotunda of the Luzerne
County Courthouse, 200 North River Street, Wilkes-Barre. The
tradition of the CCLC Annual Exhibition began when the Cultural Council
mounted a VIP exhibition in honor of the Governor's Awards for the Arts
which was held in Wilkes-Barre for the first time in June of 2006.
The
theme of this year's Exhibition promotes the power of artistic
expression to enhance awareness and stewardship of the environment, and
in particular, the Susquehanna River Watershed. This year's guest
juror is Rob Evans, artist and curator of the "Visions of the
Susquehanna - 250 Year of American Masters" exhibition and a Wyoming Valley native. Rob has work displayed
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, among many
others. His work is also represented in many private collections.
All
works are original pieces that have been created within the past
three years. The Exhibition will be housed at the Luzerne County
Courthouse, which celebrates its centennial in 2009. "Inspired by the
Susquehanna" will run through November 7th, open to the public on
weekdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

A total of $1,100 in awards will be presented in each of the
three categories, as well as Best of Show.
