Help Us Help You!

We receive a great many emails with events for our newsletter.  We wish we could include them all.  Here's how to increase the likelihood of being included:

  • Put your event on the WVIA ArtScene calendar.  We're sure to find it.  Just click Submit an event to the ArtScene calendar and fill in the blanks!
  • We like to copy and paste directly from your email to our newsletter, so please use plain text (or unadorned HTML) in your emails to us.
  • Include everything essential, but try to limit your notice to a paragraph or two.  Be sure to include your location, date(s) and time, contact information and whether the event is free (provide prices if not).
  • It's ok to attach an image, but we may not have room for it.  It helps if the image is small (maximum 200 x 200), but we can resize it if necessary.
  • Feel free to include a link for more information!
  • Try to send well in advance - preferably two weeks - but send anyway - we may have room at the last minute.  As of yet, we don't have a regular schedule, but we're aiming for every two weeks.
  • Over 4,000 people receive our news-letter, and the list is growing.  You can help us by forwarding it to folks - an easy way to inform them about YOUR event!  (See the"Forward" link at the bottom of the newsletter.)

Greetings! ,

From the Executive Director

Please visit the WVIA ArtScene Events Calendar for the broadest listing of cultural events in the region over the next couple of weeks.

We remind all venues to post their events to the calendar.  It's easy - all you have to do is go to the Events Submission page and put in your stuff!

We hope everyone enjoyed the Independence Day and the RiverFest 2008 activities!  Having just concluded a wrap-up meeting with the folks that put it all together, it looks like next year's RiverFest will be bigger and better than ever!

In keeping with the theme of the Susquehanna River, the Cultural Council has released the "Call to Artists," for our 3rd Annual Juried Exhibition, complete with everything you need to know, which is summarized below.

We've also highlighted a couple of events that have come to our attention - so get out there and ENJOY!

The Cultural Council of Luzerne County is pleased to announce our Third Annual Juried Exhibition. The tradition of the CCLC Annual Exhibition began when the Cultural Council mounted a VIP exhibition in honor of the Governor's Awards for the Arts which was held in Wilkes-Barre for the first time in June of 2006.

The theme of this year's competition promotes the power of artistic expression to enhance awareness and stewardship of the Susquehanna River Watershed. Work does not have to depict the river.

Artist must be a resident of PA, NY or MD. Original work must have been created within the past three (3) years. A maximum of three pieces may be submitted and there is a $20 entry fee for each piece of work.

Work will be accepted in three categories:

Painting:
Oil, acrylic, watercolors, or mixed media, painted on
a two-dimensional surface.
Photography:
Black & white or color (digital or film) photography.
Works on Paper:
Prints, drawings, pastels or mixed media on paper.
Selection

Juror: ROB EVANS

The exhibition will be presented at the Luzerne County Courthouse, which celebrates its centennial in 2009. There will be a gala opening reception on October 10th, and the exhibition will run through November 7th. Submissions must be postmarked no later than August 20th.

A total of $1,100 in awards will be presented in each of the three categories, as well as Best of Show.

The Best Thing in Life is Free Art!

The folks at Paper Kite Press continue to stretch the boundaries with an intriguing concept.  Rather than me trying to explain it, I'll just paste their press release here:

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
August of 2008 will mark the One Year Anniversary of Paper Kite Studio, Press, and Gallery at its current location on Main Street in Kingston. To celebrate, we're making public and explicit our promise to bring arts to the community, and, making good on that promise by re-inventing the whole notion of how an Art Gallery works.

FREE ART
All works on display for the August Anniversary show will be FREE (limit one piece per household), all we ask is that you genuinely WANT the piece you decide to own. Yes, free. No catch, no strings, no tricky marketing gimmicks. Like it, and you own it. Period. This is our way of saying "thank you" to the community that has supported us, and, our way of supporting a community that continues to say "thank you" to us for bringing the arts
to Main Street.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
First, we are asking ANY area artists who are interested in being considered for a solo or group show during the 11 months after August to submit their portfolio, representative work, slides, or CD of images for consideration along with ONE display-ready piece. The display-ready pieces will be hung during the month of August, and will be available to anyone who wants it for FREE. Selections for solo or group shows for the next exhibition cycle will be made by the end of August. All future shows will be by artists who support our philosophy of giving back to the
community by donating a piece of art to August Anniversary Shows.

Second, we are asking ALL area artists (or owners of art) to consider donating a display-ready piece of art to be given away at this event, even if you have no interest in being considered for a solo or group show at this time. Any and all artists who would like to share in this opportunity to give back to the community are invited to bring one to three pieces of work to the Gallery on Sunday August 10th between noon and 5pm. All work will be hung during the month of August, and will be available to anyone who wants it for FREE.

WHAT DO I DO NOW?
For details on how to donate art, how to have your work considered for a future show, or others ways you can help
support our initiative to give back to the community, please contact one of us:

Last Minute Must See

Something Special is mounting a new exhibit on Saturday, and the opening reception is from 5 to 7pm.  Collages by Mary Lou Steinberg is the featured event, along with all the great goodies served up by the friendly folks at Something Special, 23 West Walnut Street in Kingston.  The exhibit runs through August 15th, so if you miss the opening, stop by for lunch!

The Arts & Economic Development (reprise)

I'm reprinting last month's item the Arts and Economic Development, just because we think it's important!

I don't know if it's coincidence, but in the last month a number of items have appeared in the press or in the public record related to the impact of the arts on economic development.  We at CCLC believe strongly that a vital arts & cultural community contributes not only to quality of life, but also to economic development of a region.  A recent study by Americans for the Arts shows that, for every dollar of public funding, non-profit arts organizations & individuals generate $16 of economic growth - not a bad return!

We've created a page on our web site that collects these articles (one of which is mine, I'll admit).  We hope you'll take a look at them.

Here's just one paragraph from Philip Horn, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts:

For years we have heard the statistic that arts organizations outdraw live attendance at professional sporting events. Critics attack this measure of popularity noting the millions of people who watch sports on television. But is there a mayor anywhere who would prefer having fellow citizens watching a game on TV at home over having them join with the neighbors at a live event downtown? Furthermore, the revenues generated by these two activities could not be more distinct. Local arts organizations spend locally. They largely employ local people, be they artists or others who work in the cultural sector. These employees spend locally, recycling these revenues throughout the local economy.

Once again, here's the LINK:

If you agree that a vital arts & cultural community is worthy of public support - send us an email and let us know!  Then forward this to a like-minded friend!
