Winter Safety Tips

It's not below freezing yet, but you know the saying, "If you don't like the weather in Iowa, wait five minutes." Here's a few helpful ways to get ready and get through the upcoming winter months.

Be Prepared!
· Be sure you have a way to heat your home in case the power goes out.
· Portable space heaters should be placed at least three feet away from anything flammable (bedding, furniture, clothing, etc.).
· Insulating your wall and attics, weather-stripping doors and windows and installing storm windows are great ways to make your home fuel-efficient this winter.
· Create a plan of action with your elderly friends, family and neighbors in case of a severe winter storm.

Dressing for Cold Weather
· Dress in several loose-fitting layers rather than one heavy layer.
· Mittens are actually warmer than gloves!
· Scarves should be worn covering your mouth to protect your lungs.
· Wear clothing that is water repellent to stay warm and dry this winter.
· Close to 10% of your body heat escapes through your head - so put a lid on it!
· Always keep extra layers of clothing in your car or an extra pair of gloves in your purse or coat pockets in case of emergency.

Safe Winter Driving
· Keep an emergency kit in your car at all times that includes:
       A cell phone
       A flashlight
       Jumper cables
Sand or kitty litter (for traction)
Ice scraper, snow brush, and small shovel
       Blankets
       Warning devices (e.g., flares, reflectors)
· Check the tires, battery and antifreeze level of your car before the winter months.
· Always have at least a half tank of gas during this freezing season.
· Avoid driving in snow or ice storm!
· If you must travel in bad weather, drive slowly. Tell someone your route and expected time of arrival so that they can seek help if you do not arrive on time.

Polar Bare Run, Walk or Roll
Not only can you prepare your own home and family for the cold winter season, you can LIVE UNITED by helping other Cedar Valley families stay warm. The University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association along with Connecting Alumni to Students is gearing up for the 3rd annual Polar Bare Run, Walk or Roll winter clothing drive.

UNI students as well as the Cedar Valley community team up with the Salvation Army each year to collect winter wear items for families in need.

Sign up for a one-mile run, walk or roll around the UNI campus. The race is planned for a cold November evening so that participants can experience what it's like to be in the place of those benefiting from their donations. Don't want to run but still want to help? Bring your winter clothing to the UNI Alumni House the entire week prior to the event.

Where:
Run around campus starting and ending at the UNI Alumni House at 1012 West 23rd Street.

When:
Tuesday, November 10. Check in at 9 p.m., stretch out and donate your winter wear. The race is on at 9:30 p.m. sharp!

How much:
This is a free event - just bring new or slightly used winter wear to donate to the Salvation Army.

Who:
All are welcome to participate! Challenge your friends or register your coworkers.

Registration:
Register online, sign the liability waiver and bring it in the night of the race.

Join UNI students and fellow community members in a race to keep warm! Have a great time and LIVE UNITED at the 3rd annual Polar Bare Run, Walk or Roll event.
