Give a Saturday, Make a Difference

Thank you to all those who volunteered their Saturday morning to help paint classrooms at Cedar Valley Preschool and Child Care Center! This program has called their current facility home for over 30 years. The staff members as well as the children are thrilled to have a fresh new look in their historic center.

Not only is your volunteered time and talent appreciated but your contributions as well. Funding from Cedar Valley United Way helps support child care scholarships for families. The following stories are proof of the impact that gifts to United Way have on child care and education in the Cedar Valley:

"Chad" is a spirited, impulsive four-year-old with a sweet nature. He is currently being evaluated by Area Education Agency 267 for cognitive and social development. He and his mother, stepfather, and baby sister all benefit from the scholarship provided by Cedar Valley United Way. The family is adjusting to the mother finishing school and job searching. Special time is given to both children with their parents. "Chad" is making progress in his developmental skills and has been referred to AEA-267 for further input. This will be a shorter term scholarship than some to transition the family and insure stability for the sake of a valuable resource--"Chad!"

Once a shy, hesitant two-year-old, "Sophie" has blossomed into a vibrant, curious child full of questions and delighted with new experiences! "Sophie" lives with her grandparents and her mother, who is currently attending Hawkeye Community College. Her mother and various foster children that the grandparents assisted over the years have attended our Center, too. Though she rarely spoke when she started attending, it was clear that she was connecting because she was such an attentive observer and sometimes communicated in sign language! Now she has developed friendships, new language skills, and is eager to participate in everything---giggling with glee! As her mother creates a solid future for them, "Sophie" is gaining the skills to succeed in school and become a lifelong learner.

Thanks again to all those who LIVE UNITED by volunteering their time and supporting the education of youth in our community.
