Domestic Violence Awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Cedar Valley United Way helps fund area agencies that provide support and safety for anyone who is fighting the battle with domestic violence. One of these agencies, Seeds of Hope, LIVES UNITED by developing programs and services that inspire hope to create opportunities for a better tomorrow. The following success stories prove the great work that Seeds of Hope has been doing.

After several years of living with an abusive and alcoholic man, a woman left him and reported it to the police, gaining protection for her family. She has a strong support system helping her through these tough times. She has been employed and retained an attorney to do custody papers. This woman can now look forward to a better life.

A mother, separated from her abusive partner, accepted services from DHS. She got clean through Horizons, and then visited with a Seeds of Hope employee to find a job and place to live. She also successfully regained custody of her daughter. She did all this with only a professional support system. Realizing that her abusive partner is only getting worse, she has now done everything needed to stay safe. She is well educated and used her background to get a job. Her plans now involve moving on with her life without her husband.

Displays honoring victims and raising awareness will soon be showcased around the Cedar Valley. Look for exhibits in Maucker Union as well as on Main Street in Cedar Falls throughout the month of October.

The Seeds of Hope mission is to provide quality education and comprehensive services concerning domestic violence and sexual assault. For more information, visit www.seedsofhopeiowa.com or contact your local Seeds of Hope:

Cedar Valley Character Counts!
The Cedar Valley Character Counts! Committee strives to grow awareness of an involvement in the Character Counts! Program and to assist in developing citizens who live, model and encourage positive character in the home, business, community, and service and faith communities.

Now a committee of 44 members, the Cedar Valley Character Counts! Committee, started in November 2005. Since then, the committee has inspired area individuals and businesses to win several awards. Hellman Associates received an honorable mention for 2008 Organization of the Year, and Price Laboratory School was National Finalist in the National Schools of Character program in 2007 and 2008.

As the recipient of the 2009 Iowa Character Community Award, the committee has developed for the Cedar Valley an active community task force with a community-wide initiative to support the Six Pillars of Character, which include Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

Committee members both participate and encourage others' involvement in training activities and workshops to help our community improve its character, making the Cedar Valley a better place to live.
