Women's Philanthropy Connection

Since their first inaugural event on April 29, 2008, the Women's Philanthropy Connection (WPC) has been doing just what its mission states: Helping women express their philanthropic passion through education, mentoring and volunteering. More than fifty members were inducted that evening due to their enthusiasm for helping others and leadership-level contributions.

Women's Philanthropy Connection

Founding member Dee Vandeventer gives her thoughts on giving back to the Cedar Valley. "When you look at the needs of a community, it can seem overwhelming. Where do I begin to help? How do I help? How do I know my gift is going to be used for the best results? That's what United Way does -- it helps us help," says Vandeventer. Cedar Valley United Way is helping the WPC help by creating opportunities for them to give back to and volunteer in their community.

To learn more about the WPC and upcoming projects, please join us on September 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Hawkeye Community College. For more information about the event and becoming a member of the WPC, contact Debbie Robeson at (319) 235-6211 ext. 11 or debbie.robeson@cvuw.org.

Effective Black Parenting Workshop

One of Cedar Valley United Way's recipients, Family & Children's Council, is holding an evening course dedicated to the parents, grandparents, foster parents, and guardians of African-American children. The program, entitled Effective Black Parenting, meets every Wednesday evening from 4-8 p.m.

During this nationally acclaimed course, participants will learn strategies that are specific to raising African-American children. The Pyramid of Success for Black Children is one such strategy that these parents can use to help their children achieve their lifelong goals.

The 15-week course begins on September 9, 2009 at the YWCA of Black Hawk County. Childcare and transportation are available upon request. To register for the course or for more information, contact Marion Boggs at (319) 234-7600 ext. 21.
