Child Care Scholarships
Not all families are able to afford proper child care, which can affect their ability to work or finish school.
Cedar Valley United Way strives to help children reach their potential through education as well as helping families become financially stable and independent. In order to achieve this, they provide funding for Grin and Grow's scholarship programs.
The following are the available scholarship opportunities for the coming school year.
Voluntary Preschool Program
This program is available at no cost to parents of any child who will be four years of age by September 15, 2009. The program is offered in collaboration with the Waterloo Community Schools. Free preschool service is provided between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m., Monday through Friday. Extended day child care is available for $13.50 per day for hours attended before 9 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Cedar Valley Promise "School Ready" ScholarshipsThis program is available at no cost to parents of any three or four year old child whose family income is below 200% of poverty guidelines. School Ready scholarships pay for the morning unit of care. Extended day child care is available for $13.50 per day. Cedar Valley United Way ScholarshipsThis program provides parents of any child whose family income is below 200% of poverty guidelines, with a sliding fee scholarship based upon the family income and size, and if the parent(s) are either working an average of 28 hours per week or are full time students. Scholarships awarded to eligible families may reduce the cost of full day child care by as much as $14 per day. Under a full scholarship, a parent's child care cost would be $9.50 a half day or $19.00 a full day for an infant or toddler, and $6.50 per half day or $13.00 a full day for a child age 2-5 years. State Child Care Assistance
Grin and Grow accepts State Child Care Assistance certificates for funding child care services to families with incomes under 145% of poverty level, and whose parents work an average of 28 hours per week or are full time students. Scholarship eligibility and parent fees are set by the Iowa Department of Human Services.
One parent shared her experience with Grin and Grow child care:
My previous child care was through an in-home provider. She started taking days off on short notice for various reasons. It was so stressful trying to juggle my work schedule around her ever-changing schedule. I ended up missing a lot of work and then of course, a lot of pay. It is so nice not to have those problems anymore. I have three children in childcare at Grin and Grow. Without child care assistance, I could not afford child care and would not be able to work.
Grin and Grow centers are open at two Waterloo locations Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information about enrolling a child into any one of Grin and Grow's scholarship programs, call (319) 291-2424.
