Please help with the 17th annual Letter Carriers' Food Drive by leaving bags of nonperishable food by your mailbox this Saturday, May 9, and your letter carrier or a volunteer will deliver the food to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, The Salvation Army and St. Vincent DePaul. Every day letter carriers across the country see families that struggle to make ends meet, and so contacted their partners in this effort to stamp out hunger to make their communities a better place. This nationwide food drive is scheduled for a time when food banks' and pantries' donations fall off. This food will help the organizations support people who need help during the summer months. Carriers collected a record 73.1 million pounds of food in last year's drive. The drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in over 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The letter carriers perform their regular duties of delivering mail during this event in addition to collecting food. Many have their families assist them with food collection on their route. Some routes make it very difficult to carry food and deliver mail, so carriers will need assistance which comes from many sources like the Community Services Committee, local church youth groups and Scout troops as well as individuals. You can help by placing bags of nonperishable food next to your mailbox Saturday or volunteering during the day. For more information, please contact John Padget at 319.235.6211 ext. 12.
