At last night's Greater Cedar Valley Chamber of Commerce Annual Celebration, Cedar Valley United Way was honored as the Cedar Valley Organization of the Year. This is an award that truly belongs to you -- our donors, volunteers and partners. Your gifts of time, talents and resources enable United Way to work toward the goal of advancing the common good for our community. In 2008, Cedar Valley United Way provided funding to 91 programs throughout the Cedar Valley that focus on helping children and youth succeed, supporting the elderly and disabled, and poverty reduction. The $2.83 million you helped raise during the 2008 campaign will very soon be given out in funding grants and put to work to create a better and stronger Cedar Valley. After 86 years of service, Cedar Valley United Way is still focused on advancing the common good here in our community. In 1923, a group of visionary leaders investigated the idea of establishing a Community Fund in Waterloo, an initiative discussed at an International Rotary Convention. In its inception that fall as the Waterloo Community Fund, the organization raised $63,434 to fund agencies including the Boy Scouts of America, Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA and Social Welfare League. Over the years, the organization expanded its reach to include communities within a 30-mile radius of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metro area. Today Cedar Valley United Way is still working toward that same mission of advancing the common good by funding the human service organizations that create opportunities for a better life for all in the Cedar Valley. Over the years, Cedar Valley United Way has raised $87,035,827 for the community. Thank you for your role in making Cedar Valley United Way the Organization of the Year.
