Thank Your Mentor Day
January 22 is Thank Your Mentor Day. Your contributions help fund mentoring programs through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa. Here are some facts about students with mentors:

-69.9% of students with mentors had improved academic performance
-63% of students with mentors were better prepared for school
-57.7% of students with mentors had an improved sense of future

Jacayla and Branden were matched in August of 2008. Branden's mom was nervous at first with her son having a Big Sister, but it didn't take long for Jacayla to win her over. "They are an awesome match! I was so nervous at first but it turned out great. Jacayla is such a sweetheart!" Branden and Jacayla spend their time going to movies, the arcade, volleyball and basketball games, eating out, or just hanging out at Jacayla's place playing Guitar Hero. Branden's mom has noticed that since he has been matched he has shown improvement in his self-confidence as well shown progress in school subjects where he had struggled before. Jacayla has also noticed a positive change in attitude from Branden and enjoys watching him come out of his shell.

You don't need special skills to listen, offer encouragement and share what you've learned about life. Volunteer as a mentor. Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa (319) 235-9397.
