September is National Update Your Resume Month. Portfolio Creative Owners, Kristen and Catherine, have both written articles this month with great resume tips and reminders. If we don't have your most recent resume on file, now is a great time to send it! Please email it to talent@portfolioiscreative.com, and if you're not sure what to name the resume, be sure to watch this month's 'Ask a Recruiter' video tip.
For the fourth year in a row, we are extremely pleased to announce that we've made the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing firms in America. Our growth rate over the past three years was 71% and we are 103 nationally in the human resource sector. Thank you clients and talent for helping us achieve this honor. Creative Scene
Columbus Design Summit
For the first time ever, CSCA is placing designers and clients on stage at the same time. Their mission: An honest discussion about delicate balance of creative and commerce, design and decision-making, that we all face as communication professionals. Every day, agencies and corporations join forces to achieve great work - sometimes smoothly, sometimes less so. CSCA has invited a powerhouse panel of design leaders and corporate clients to share their views on collaboration, expectations, communication, and more - valuable insights for our student and working members alike.
Bring Your Questions! Half of the discussion will be moderated (our own Kristen Harris is co-moderating!), and half will be open to audience questions. Don't hold back - stand up and share a thought or question, or submit an anonymous comment or query via Twitter. Date: Thursday, September 20th Time: 6:30 pm Social Hour, 7:30 pm Presentation Location: Arena Grand Theatre More Info: www.cscarts.org

Opportunity Knocks
Reading Between the Resume Lines
Catherine Lang-Cline, Owner
"Sometimes people don't represent themselves the best on paper. It can be difficult to sell yourself. One of the best things you can do is revisit that one resume that caught your eye for no reason at all and bring them in for an interview."

Update Your Resume Month: 4 Ways to Get Noticed
Kristen Harris, Owner
"Make your story engaging! Rather than just listing job titles and duties, include details that will engage your reader. The first section of the resume should be an executive summary of your background, experience and (perhaps) what you're looking for."

Dear Executive Search, I'm part of an internal corporate marketing team that is searching for a Marketing Manager. It's been six months and we haven't found the perfect person yet. We've met a couple of people who we've liked and even made an offer that ended up getting declined. How can we get the talent we want? -Perfection Seeker
Dear Perfection Seeker, The only perfect thing that exists is the steak I grill on Friday nights. The quick answer, of course, is to hire a search firm that specializes in the role you're looking to fill. There's my self-interest plug. Otherwise, six months is too long and I would suspect that your team is not in agreement with the skills and personality that are required. The fact that you had someone decline the offer perhaps says more about your team and the presentation of your company than the candidate herself. Look within, Grasshopper. -ES --------------------------------------------------------- Dear Executive Search, I've received an offer that's in the range that I hoped it would be and I'm pleased, but I'm expecting a second interview with a company that is maybe more appealing to me. I'm worried about the timing...I need to give the offering company an answer, but I also kind of want to wait the other opportunity out to see where it goes. How should I manage this? -Weighing My Options
Dear Weighing My Options, Something is something; nothing is nothing. You've been given a satisfying offer, but you're considering declining it because someone else you want to impress may want to have a conversation with you soon. Choose the something. -ES

New Year, New Initiatives
Green Tip Become an energy star! Save energy and save money. Purchase appliances and electronics with an Energy Star rating so you can be sure you are buying energy efficient products and do a home energy audit to find out how you can save money by making your home more energy efficient. If every American home replaced just one conventional light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year! Wellness Tip Our Wellness Committee has a recipe for you this month. Trust us, it's healthy AND tasty! Green Smoothie 1 avocado 2 big handfuls of spinach or kale 1 pear or green apple 1/2 large cucumber peeled 3/4 - 1 cup coconut water a few ice cubes Blend until smooth & enjoy! |
