Greetings!
Happy June! Summer finally feels like it's here, so we treated ourselves to some locally-made sorbet during a recent team meeting. In the picture to the right, you'll see that this impromptu afternoon snack from Jeni's made talking about strategy and branding even more productive! We were recently asked by The Metropreneur (Central Ohio's online resource for all things related to small business development and entrepreneurialism) to share ideas on how we are streamlining our business, reducing costs and saving money. Check out our article in their monthly feature, "Dollars & Sense." Portfolio Creative was once again named to the Columbus C.E.O Leaderboard listing of top 'Temporary Employment Agencies.' The ranking is based on billed hours in Central Ohio and with over 168,000 in 2010, that's a lot of creative work getting done! You'll notice we have a new Ezine feature this month, "Mac Tips & Hints." Our website analytics tell us that over 60% of our visitors are on a MacOS or iPhone. Our friends at Wildfrog have offered to contribute quarterly with helpful advice for all you Mac users, followers and soon-to-be converters. -The Portfolio Team

Position Yourself for Success in Creative Careers
Catherine Lang-Cline, Owner
"As we all know, the job market is pretty challenging right now, especially for new grads. Recently, I was asked by some soon-to-be graduates about how to get started in a creative career. Nabbing that first job, either as a freelancer or permanent staffer, is going to take some time and drive. So think of marketing yourself as your first job. Design some stand-out business cards and come up with a strategy as to how you are going to make your first "sale."

Mac Tips & Hints
* MacDefender (and other variants with similar names) is a slimy piece of malware that's been making the rounds recently. A web site falsely informs you that your Mac is infected and you need to download their utility. If installed, it tries to convince you to provide your credit card info for "security" software. Apple has released Security Update 2011-003 to address this little inconvenience.
* Here's an easy way to check for unsaved changes in your documents. In the top left corner of almost any window are the red, yellow, and green dots. If you're working on a document, it's easy to tell if you have unsaved changes. If there are unsaved changes, there will be a black dot in the middle of the red dot. Otherwise, there is no dot and an X will appear in the red dot when moving the cursor over it.
* Inline attachments in Apple's Mail application. We really like Apple's Mail application, but one of the most annoying things about it is that it tries to "help" by displaying images (PDFs, JPGs, etc) rather than just showing the icons for the attachments. You have a couple of options in dealing with this. You can right-click (or Control+click) on the attached image and select "View as Icon". To automate the process and get additional features, try an app called Attachment Tamer ($14.99 - http://bit.ly/e3Vm4S.) Attachment Tamer will let you specify how each type of attachment is handled and more.

Survey Says: Employers Feeling a Talent Shortage Kristen Harris, Owner
"Why are employers having such a difficult time filling positions when there are clearly a lot of people looking for work? One in four of the employers surveyed stated environmental/market factors, they just can't find anyone available in their area. Another 22% said applicants lack the technical competencies needed, and 15% of companies stated lack of business knowledge or formal qualifications as the main reason candidates did not qualify."
