Business Inventories Rise in October

Business inventories rose 0.8% in October while sales increased, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

The stockpiles gain followed little change in September.

Sales rose 0.7%.

The October inventories increase matched economists' projections, Bloomberg reported.

Factory inventories, which make up about two-fifths of the total, rose 0.9%, while wholesale inventories, which make up about 30%, climbed 1.6%.

When sales are growing, it usually means trucking is seeing additional demand to deliver goods and restock shelves.

Diesel Drops - Third Decline

Diesel's national average pump price fell 3.7 cents to $3.894 a gallon, its third straight downturn, while gasoline also declined, the Department of Energy said Monday.

Gasoline fell 1.6 cents to $3.274 a gallon for a fourth straight drop, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Diesel has dropped 11.6 cents in the past three weeks, though it rose 12.3 cents in two weekly increases just prior to that.

Trucking's main fuel is now 66.3 cents higher than the same week last year, while gasoline is 29.4 cents over a year ago, according to DOE records.

Oil prices fell $1.64 Monday to $97.77 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest in more than two weeks.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.

 Fla. Women Stole Christmas Decorations

Police say two South Florida women are accused of stealing Christmas decorations from their neighbor's yard and putting them in a yard less than a block away.

Police in the Miami suburb of Sweetwater say about $500 of items were taken, including Mickey Mouse on a horse, hugging penguins, Snoopy on a doghouse and Santa on a sled.

Miami television station WSVN reports surveillance camera video captured the two thieves taking the decorations from the lawn of Inrid Alemendarez's home.

She called police after spotting the decorations on a lawn less than a block away. The women were arrested on charges of grand theft. Their names were not released.
