Cancer survivors have higher death risk for decades
LONDON (Reuters) - People who survive cancer in childhood have a heightened risk of dying of a heart attack, stroke or another cancer decades later -- a risk that is likely to be due to the original treatment, scientists said on Tuesday. A study by British researchers of death rates among almost 18,000 people who survived childhood cancer found that the number of premature deaths among survivors was 11 times the number expected in the general population.
The findings suggest cancer survivors' long-term health is at risk from the treatment they receive in childhood and shows the need to find ways of improving that treatment and ensuring patients have better access to long-term care. Read Full Article
A hot dog or two a week? Big deal!
(OMNS July 2, 2010) Maybe it is. Children who eat one hot dog a week double their risk of a brain tumor; two per week triples the risk. Kids eating more than twelve hot dogs a month (three a week) have nearly ten times the risk of leukemia as children who eat none.
And it is not just about kids. Of 190,000 adults studied for seven years, those eating the most processed meat such as deli meats and hot dogs had a 68 percent greater risk of pancreatic cancer than those who ate the least. Pancreatic cancer is especially difficult to treat.
Think twice before you serve up your next tube steak. If your family is going to eat hot dogs, at least take your vitamins. Hot dog eating children taking supplemental vitamins were shown to have a reduced risk of cancer. Vitamins C and E prevent the formation of nitrosamines. Read Full Article |

Recipe | |
Mixed Greens with Onions and Garlic
-
2 Bunches of Kale
- 2 Bunches of Collard Greens
- 2 Bunches of Swiss Chard
- 1 1/2 Yellow Onion
- 4 Cloves of Garlic
- Wash and clean greens.
- Cut off any thick stalk and slice down the center. Then cut into 1/2 inch ribbons.
- Slice onion, and finely chop garlic.
- Add onions and garlic into a large surface area pan. (Add 1/4 inch of soup stock, if needed.) Turn on high for 2-3 minutes until it starts to steam.
- Add greens and cover. Turn to low and let cook for about 40 minutes or until done.

Inspiring Patient Stories | |
My name is Sharlene, and my sister and I were both diagnosed with breast cancer and are using the Gerson Therapy to treat it. Mine was poorly differentiated and had metastasized to several places, and hers was moderately differentiated with mets to the lymph system. I've been on the Therapy for two and a half years now and am slowly easing off the intense therapy. I still get occasional healing reactions, so I continue to drink ten cups of juice a day and use 2-3 coffee enemas a day. My sis is just six months in, so she is on the full therapy. Neither of us had chemo or radiation. But I had a biopsy to an enlarged lymph node, and she had her breast tumor removed along with two lymph nodes. My lymph node sealed off after the biopsy and continued to grow slowly for another year. The rest of my tumors, including the one on the breast bone, healed within six weeks on the Gerson Therapy.
This has been an amazing time for both of us. My arthritis and carpal tunnel in my hands has healed. My cholesterol level is normal for the first time in 20 years. My thyroid gland, which showed a pre-cancerous uptake, is now completely normal, and my blood sugar is now completely normal.
My sister stopped all her diuretics and blood pressure medications after two weeks on the Gerson Therapy, and her blood pressure has continued to drop. She is now completely normal. She was pre-diabetic and that's healed. She had to quit playing softball a couple of years ago because of pain and weakness in her left leg. Last week her left thigh turned red, swelled and became so painful she couldn't walk. That lasted 24 hours and then the same thing happened to her calf and ankle. Now her leg is perfectly fine.
This is a wonderful therapy and it works very well. It takes a long time but if you just let the body take its time to heal, it will.
