County Governments As Reckless as Feds!
Local Politicians seek more taxes and more freedom too.

The last week has shown that local governments care as little for your freedom and tax money as the Federal guys do!

(Even if you don't live in these areas, get involved in local government. Almost no one does, and every single county in this state is currently building on their wish lists! When they begin to see your face, they begin to pay attention to your voice!)

We are organizing in Northern Indiana to oppose tax increases in 4 counties to build something off of a politician's wish list: A regional transit line with no forseeable benefit to those residents. Lake County residents already pay over $12,000 a year in taxes to the county. Porter and LaPorte pay over $9000! What are you REALLY getting for those services? Imagine if that was money in your pocket, and now they want more! (For more info, go here: http://lpin.org/node/772)

In Indy, the smoking ban proponents are at it again! They say that it is a matter of public safety, and that small business owners will no be affected. We are asking you to contact your Indy City Councilors to say NO! to amending the smoking ban!

Here is a sampling of our research! (For more, and to see footnotes,  see http://lpin.org/node/774)

"One highly visible side effect of smoking bans is their adverse economic effects. A Montreal Economic Institute study examining several Canadian cities concluded that sales at bars and pubs were 22.5% lower than they would have been without the ban. Interestingly, the article adds that the population's smoking rate remained at 25%, about a fifth above the national average, despite the ban, providing evidence that prohibitive measures do not change smoking habits. (Footnote 1)"

"According to a study by The Economist, the number of pubs closing per week in Britain doubled after a 2007 smoking ban. (Footnote 4)"

"Even the federal government admits that the dangers of secondhand smoke are greatly exaggerated. The United States Occupational Safety and Health Act, designed to enforce safe work environments, determined that the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) were negligible and are not subject to government interference. (Footnote 7)"

"Perhaps worst of all, prohibitive legislation has been shown to increase alcohol-related fatalities. Bans give patrons incentives to drive farther in order to find bars that allow smoking. Studies have shown (Footnote 9) that smoking bans increase the number of DUI arrests. A June 2008 study published by the Journal of Public Economics examined alcohol-related accidents in neighboring counties where only one enforced a smoking ban. It concluded that towns that enacted smoking bans from 2000 to 2005, on average, enjoyed a 13% increase in drunk driving fatalities the following year. Of particular note, a ban in Boulder, Co., increased fatal accidents in neighboring Jefferson County by more than 40%. When the study analyzed all border counties (where one has a ban and the other does not), it found that alcohol-related accidents increased by nearly 25%. (Footnote 10)"

The LPIN affirms the following principles:

That all people possess certain unalienable natural rights, and that among these are rights to life, liberty, justly acquired property, and self-governance. That the only moral basis of government is the preservation and protection of unalienable natural rights. That no person or institution, public or private, has the right to initiate the use of physical force or fraud against another person, and that all people are bound, without contract, to abstain from infringing upon the natural rights of other people. That all people are entitled to choose their own lifestyles, as long as they do not forcibly impose their values on others. That the voluntary and unrestricted exchange of goods and services is fundamental to a peaceful and harmonious society.
