PG Distributor
March 2010

Greetings!

Welcome to the March issue of the PG Distributor!  Spring is right around the corner and the days are already starting to feel a little warmer at PG headquarters in New England.  This weekend is the New England Food Show and we will be there showcasing our breakfast offerings, and giving our loyal customers $2 off per case on select items.  With that in mind, this month, we're focusing the newsletter on breakfast trends and how you can make the most out of the first meal of the day.

Healthy Breakfast Options Increase Sales
Diners are continuing to be health conscious when it comes to eating out and many operations have updated their breakfast menu to be healthier to appeal to diners who are looking for a nutritious way to start the day, but don't have the time to eat at home.  Things like whole wheat pancakes and egg white omelets have been showing up on menus with greater frequency than they were a few years ago.

If you have a captive audience, such as meeting guests or students, consider offering them a few healthy options along with the standard breakfast buffet fare.  Hot cereal, like oatmeal, and easy to eat breakfast wraps can be huge sellers to a crowd that is looking to fill up in the morning without the empty calories.

If you rely on foot traffic, consider advertising your breakfast specials.  Breakfast is often the easiest meal of the day to cut costs, as many items don't include meat.  If diners are aware of your healthy and affordable options, you may find yourself with some new regulars.

Get Your Diners Out the Door with Grab and Go Breakfast
It seems like morning is the one time of day when everyone is rushing to get somewhere.  Having grab and go breakfast options can help you capture extra business that you would not get if you only offered a sit down meal.  Whether your clientele are students or business travelers, chances are good they are in a rush to get somewhere first thing in the morning.  The reason that so many people skip breakfast is because they don't have the time to sit down for a meal.  Just by offering something as simple as a breakfast wrap or bagel, you can increase breakfast sales.

Review your current breakfast offerings and see if any of your items can be made portable and then advertise that option to your customers. Mini sandwiches and breakfast burritos can be an easy addition to your menu if you need more items that will work for grab and go.
Breakfast Favorites Break Onto Dessert Menus
Back when you were a kid (and maybe even still today) breakfast for dinner was a big treat.  Something about having pancakes and eggs at night just made them even more special.  Restaurants across the country are starting to offer breakfast inspired desserts that have that same feeling of being an extra special treat.

Maybe because so many breakfast flavors are sweet, putting them at the end of dinner seems to be a natural step.  Cinnamon doughnuts, chocolate pain perdue and beer-battered French toast are some of the unique options that have been popping up on menus at five star establishments across the country.  Bacon is another popular breakfast flavor that is finding its way onto post-dinner menus.

The trend of breakfast foods showing up on dessert menus is just another indicator of the popularity of comfort foods.  As much as people want the comfort of familiar flavors, they are still willing to experiment with things like bacon flavored ice cream.  Classic flavors with a modern presentation are sure to be an ongoing trend through 2010.
