Greetings!

Welcome to another edition of Food for Thought. This month, colleges and universities all over the country prepare for returning students and we tell you about some trends that are making the news.

We also talk about Food Allergies and some common misconceptions about them.

Finally, we prepare for the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show September 7-9 and the Mid Atlantic Food, Beverage and Lodging Expo in Baltimore September 19-20. Be sure to stop by and check out our booth!

College students are less likely to settle for a slice of pizza on the run than the used to be. Today's students are savvy customers and aren't afraid to voice their opinions when it comes to dining options.

Colleges and universities around the country are stepping up to improve dining facilities and menu options. From renovations to serving local products, campus dining is making huge steps forward.

This article from University Business shows what four schools around the country are doing to improve their campus dining options.

Doctors estimate that approximately 12 million American suffer from food allergies. Though people can be allergic to any type of food, there are eight foods that account for 90% of all allergic reactions. These eight foods are:
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (walnuts, cashews)
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Soy
  • Wheat

The FDA discusses the difference between food allergies and intolerance here.
