November 4, 2008

Dear Partners:

The fall is a busy time here at AGM.  With all that is happening in the world today, AGM is working hard to bring you the most up-to-date resources and workshops to help you navigate these tricky times.

Thank you to all of you who attended our Nonprofit Partners Conference - Thriving in a Changing Landscape in September. The conference was a huge success and Tracy Gary inspired us all on what was one of the worst days of the current economic crisis.

For those of you that couldn't make it, please see the details below about a discussion and survey we conducted about the current economic crisis and what you want funders to know. Complete the short survey, and have your input included in our report to the funding community!

As a follow-up to the report, we are hosting a special program to continue this conversation with both the funders and nonprofits - we hope you will join us! (see below for details).

In this month's Update, you will find information on upcoming events, links to RFP's and much much more.

See our website (www.agmconnect.org) for more information or feel free to call me with any questions.

AGM in the News!

NPR Coverage at Nonprofit Partners Meeting
Associated Grant Makers is making news and making a splash.  Conversations at our annual Nonprofit Partners Meeting: Thriving in a Changing Landscape were included in a WBUR news story about the nonprofit sector's wariness in the current economic climate.  At the Meeting, we asked participants to discuss some key questions about funders and nonprofits in the months ahead.
Listen to the story here

Now Open, First Grants Resource Center!
The opening of the first of the Grants Resource Centers was covered by the Boston Globe.  The Lawrence Grants Resource Center will offer local nonprofits access to the types of databases, resources and services that would only normally be available to nonprofits who came into AGM's offices in downtown Boston.  AGM thanks the Stevens Foundation for their support of this first Center.
AGM Resources that can make all the difference!

Nonprofits are benefiting from AGM Partnership!
In the last week we heard from two organizations that are AGM Partners. One organization told us that he had responded to one of the RFPs in the AGM database that had been highligted in the Partners newsletter and had requested a grant of $20,000, the foundation called him back and told him they weren't going to give him the $20,000-but were sending a check for $40,ooo.

Another AGM Partner called this morning to tell us that the research Georganna had done for them as AGM Fellows unearthed a foundation right in their own town that they had not known about - and they got a small grant this round with a promise for larger grants in the future!
Please let us know how you are doing and how AGM is making a difference for your nonprofit.

A special program for Nonprofits
to discuss the current Economic Crisis

On September 26, at the Nonprofit Partners Conference: Thriving in a Changing Landscape, we asked three questions of attendees regarding the current economic crisis and what they would like funders to know.

The questions were:
  1. What one thing is worrying you (as an organization) the most?
  2. What is the one thing you want funders to know?
  3.  What is the thing that is giving you hope for the future?
The information gathered from your responses was turned into a report to the funding community.  This report has been delivered to our grant making members and will be discussed at an upcoming program for funders hosted by AGM.

If you would like to contribute YOUR feedback to the report, click HERE
Your answers will be added to the report.

Join us on November 19th to join in on the conversation! Join your nonprofit colleagues to continue the discussion of the current economic situation, and the implications for funders and nonprofits as we move into the winter and the new year. For more details and to register, see the events calendar below

Stay tuned for a joint program to be held in January with both the funding and the nonprofit communities on this topic. The date and location of this event is TBD.

If you have questions or would like a copy of the report, please contact Carol Lavoie Schuster at clavoieschuster@agmconnect.org
We look forward to seeing you at this conversation.

Clarifications were also made in reporting compensation, including revised definitions for deferred compensation, compensation paid by related organizations, and compensation paid to former employees. Other changes include a narrowing of the definition for "business relationship" in the Governance section, and clarifications on thresholds for reporting transactions with interested persons in Schedule L. Links to the instructions and background documents may be found at: Instructions and Background Information Source: IRS Newswire, Tax Analysts, BNA Daily Tax Report, Independent Sector PolicyDigest
