The buzz may be all about
social media: Twitter, Facebook, etc., but the proven money is in email. While we certainly recommend that a campaign
or organization will benefit by effectively including a variety of social media
in a comprehensive online campaign, don't expect a few "Tweets" or a Facebook
page to compensate for a lack of a consistent, creative, content-rich email
program. It's the digital equivalent of
the reliable direct mail program ten years ago.
But, today, email provides a much better return on investment and can be
executed much more quickly.
One of our clients (a
Republican Party in a large county), measured the impact of their email program
on their fundraising results. Once we
launched their new website, they started to receive unsolicited donations,
which was great. But, even more
interesting is the fact that 70-80% of
those unsolicited donations were in direct response to an email newsletter
that they sent. Even better, over half were from first time donors!
They also found that email is
a valuable asset in event promotion. The first email invitation they sent
resulted in a sell-out crowd for the event.
A bonus is that since they drove people back to the website to purchase
the event tickets, they had all of the money in-hand before the day of the
event.
