Every State and County Republican Party Should be an Internet Success Story

Especially during economically challenging times, every dollar must be used to its best advantage.

If you are still relying on the fundraising, recruiting and organizing techniques you have used for the last 25 years (or more!),  you are less successful than you should be.

Greetings!

If you are a candidate or member of a political organization and want to build your community, the answer is YES!  Unless you are living under a rock, you are hearing more and more about Twitter and you may be wondering what the buzz is all about.

What is Twitter?  It is a free micro-blogging service.  All posts are limited to 140 characters, which makes it quick and easy to do.  It also requires that you get to the point - no fluff.  A posting is known as a "tweet".  People follow the tweets of anyone that they find interesting.  You can search for people by name or for subjects by key word.  For example, if you want to find people posting comments about the so-called stimulus bill, search on those key words and you will get a list of relevant posts.  You may find posts that are especially interesting, which may inspire you to "follow" that individual.

I started my Twitter account two weeks ago and am increasingly impressed by the possibilities.  For building community, it has a very personal and casual feel.  I chose to "follow" some elected officials for whom I already had some admiration, but, as I see more of their tweets, I definitely am feeling like I am part of their circle and am building a relationship with them.  This is exactly what any candidate or political organization should work towards with their communication strategy.

The "Twitter-sphere" already has over 100 tools and utilities developed by third parties that expands its capabilities.  Don't get bogged down with all of those - just open a Twitter account and get started.  Take a few minutes each day to post your tweet and select people to follow.  You'll soon start to understand the power of this tool.  We'll have more to say in future articles about how to build Twitter into your communications plan.  But for now, just give it a try!

Sincerely,
