What You Can Learn About Email From the Presidential Campaigns

In case you haven't noticed, email is an integral part of all of the presidential campaigns.  It is no longer optional.  It is the "go to" medium for candidates to build community and raise money.  If you have any doubt about this, just take a look at the flow of email messages emanating from each of the major campaigns at the end of the fundraising reporting period at the end of September.

Messages were sent every couple of days.  Many took a personal approach and some even included incentives to send a contribution - in most cases, opportunities to meet the candidate up close and personal.

Even if you're not Rudy Giuliani, these techniques can work for you.  But, there are a couple of prerequisites to the successful use of email:  a good list and consistency of implementation. 

Good email lists don't materialize overnight and require continual nurturing.  They are perishable assets!  If you plan to support any candidate or ballot proposition in 2008, you should be building and cultivating your email list now.  Here are just a few ways to build your own in-house list:

  • Ask like-minded organizations to send your newsletter to their list and encourage them to sign up for a subscription.
  • Develop a regularly published, informative newsletter that will remind your supporters why they should care about your organization or candidate.
  • Encourage your subscribers to forward your newsletter to their friends and family.

  • Place paid ads in the newsletters of publications that serve your target audience and motivate them to subscribe to your list.

Used properly, email is a powerful and economical communications vehicle.  Don't let the presidential candidates reap all of the benefits - get in on the action!
