Dear Readers,

A warm welcome goes out to new subscribers: Lutheran Social Service adoptive and foster parents, The International School of Minnesota, new coaching clients, and online visitors to nurturedheart.com.

You hear a lot about burnout these days, especially with the economy causing over-employment, when companies don't replenish vacated positions and the workload falls to those who remain.  Can the stress that parents feel from over-employment, under-employment, or job loss be a major factor in kids' stress?  A new study says yes.

Parents' Stress Brings Kids' Stress
 And ways to avoid it
Crabby parent
A New York Times article addresses the topic of Finnish children under stress.  It says that same-gender parents' stress has a great impact on the girls, and on the boys.  It seems to make sense.  Boys are looking to their dads for hints on how to become men.  Girls are doing likewise with their moms and becoming women. If the parents are under a great deal of stress, the modeling of stress is a natural follow-up.

What the article doesn't discuss is how the interactions between parents and kids affect the children's physiology.  It's not a realistic expectation to be stressed during the day, whether at work or in life, to come home and exhibit the stress by a lack of patience, and then to expect children to behave well.  Kids (especially intense ones) pick up on parents' stress through body language, tone of voice, urgency, and parental demands.  Their natural reaction is to lash out or run away (which sometimes means withdraw.)
