Adjusting to the school year, including homework.
Dear Readers, By this time of the school year, the honeymoon has sometimes worn off, and behavior issues have begun to arise. So in this issue of Nurturing News, I'm offering tips for helping intense children adjust to the new year.
1. When behavior issues arise, don't make them escalate by giving them a lot of energy. Calm yourself, sit down, and ask the child for his or her best solution. It's remarkable how well kids can solve problems when the trust for solving them is placed into their hands.
2. Wait to ask about your child's day. Parents are anxious to hear about their kids' days, but so many kids are reluctant or oppositional when asked. Let children settle in and relax after their school day. Then at the dinner table, go around and have each person say something funny or fun about his or her day. You'll have less pressure, more togetherness, and stronger interactions.
3. Include the kids in making a homework plan in advance, and write the plan down. More predictability and child involvement allows the kids to face a challenging time of the day with more courage and less anxiety. Be flexible about where the homework is done, and help kids think of the best place to study. Kids with sensory issues will do much better if they can stand, move around, sit on exercise balls, and take frequent breaks. Have snacks available, too!
All the best to you and your young students! Tina

A Client Shares Her Thoughts on Last Month's Nurturing News
Dear Tina,
I love your e-mail updates and I truly followed the back to school suggestions in the last one. I was one "cool" and "confident" mom when we were preparing and discussing school, and all has gone extremely well with all our forethought and structure.
You're just the best Tina, your messages and coaching truly turned my spirit around in how I feel about Lucy and her future.
Forever grateful,
Debra Landwehr | |

If you've been hesitating to call for a coaching appointment, maybe it's because you are worried about how the session will go. Please note that I listen deeply to parents, in the same way I ask parents to listen deeply to their kids. There's no judgment. It's actually a relief to tell your story and get help with the bedtime, opposition, transition, and morning issues you face. Why live with strife another day? Call 651-453-0123 for help with children of ALL ages (even 27!)
