Fresh picked hops! What can be better? This year we are getting 1 lb bags of freshly picked hops from Yakima. You too can make "fresh hop" or "wet hop" beers like all the local brewpubs and breweries. These hops are picked, but not dried, so they have even more hop aroma's and flavors.
These hops have a short shelf life, so they are available on a pre-paid basis.
Also, for the first time, fresh picked grapes are coming to us from the Yakima Valley....
Cheers!

Fresh Hops - Yum!
We are now taking pre-paid orders for Fresh Wet Hops! Want to get the most hop aroma and flavor in your beer? Fresh hops are just the ticket! Fresh hops need to be used differently than the typical "dry" hops normally used in brewing. Boiling them for the entire 60 minute boil can lead to excessive off flavors (think grass flavored beer!) The best way to use them is late kettle additions (the last 15 minutes or so) for aroma and flavor purposes, or dry hopping.
Please keep in mind that you use fresh, wet hops, vs. dry hops in a 5 to 1 ratio. So you will need 5 ounces of fresh hops to equal 1 ounce of dry hops.
Here is the 5 varieties of fresh hops available, all at $12.49 per pound:
Citra -Strong citrus, grapefruit, melon, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit and Lycee Simcoe - Unique pine like aroma
Cascade - Medium intensity, floral and citrus
Centennial - Medium intensity, floral and citrus
Chinook - Medium intensity, spicy, piney and distinctive grapefruit
The Fresh Wet Hops will be delivered to us as soon as they are harvested in September, typically about September 20th or later. There may be different harvest dates for different varieties. As soon as we receive them, we will ship them to you or post it to our Facebook page for you to come pick them up. (be sure to "friend" our Facebook page below) Keep in mind, that they will not keep for more than about a week, and need to be used right away to keep them from spoiling. Freezing them does not really work to prevent spoilage.
Because of the short shelf life of this item, we require a pre-payment to order them for you. Do not purchase these hops unless you have plans to brew with them shortly after we notify you that they are available to pick up. (read: be flexible about the timing!) One bag will be perfect for about 10 gallons of beer. The deadline to order these Fresh Hops is Wednesday, August 10th, 2011, 3 pm. All fresh, wet hops are sold by the pound only. One pound fresh hops is roughly equivalent to 3.5 ounces of dry leaf or pellet hops.
If you are ordering them online to pick up in store, please choose "In Store Pickup" as the shipping method and pay via credit card or Web gift card.

Fresh Yakima Valley Grapes coming This Fall!
I recently visited the Yakima Valley, and found a grape farmer that fits my needs to sell fresh grapes to you this fall. Varieties available are the usual suspects, with 6 white grapes and 6 red grapes available. We will be selling them in 25 lb boxes. It takes about 100 lbs to make 6 gallons of wine. We will pick up the grapes in the Yakima Valley, and you can then pick them up here at the store. We will offer crushing and pressing services as part of the program. There are early ripening grapes, that typically are harvested in late September to early October. These grapes are: - Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Gewurztraminer
- Pinot Gris
- Merlot
- Lemberger
The late ripening grapes, that are harvested about mid to late October, are:
- Chenin Blanc
- Riesling
- Cabernet Franc
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Syrah
- Sangiovese (in short supply)
This growing season is off to a late start, so it is likely that the above dates will be a bit later this year.
We will be selling these grapes on a "Prepaid Pre-Order" basis. Pricing for this years crop has not yet been established, and should be established about the end of August. We will send out another newsletter at that time with firm pricing.
Based on last years pricing, the 25 lb. boxes will vary from about $36 to $46.
