fair Entries Needed for the Clark County Fair Beer and Wine Exhibition

Start lining up your entries for the 2011 Clark County Fair Beer and Wine Exhibition.  Entries will be accepted here at Bader Beer & Wine Supply from Friday, July 8th to Tuesday, August 2nd, at 3 pm.

Many home-brewing and wine competitions are just that, aggressive competitions.  This one is not.  Our goal for this exhibition is simply honest feedback from judges about the quality of your beer and wine.

While the ribbons are great, the best part of this for you the brewer & vintner is that you will get detailed judging sheets with judges comments.   These comments are a great way to get an honest evaluation, and with that, we can provide helpful tips on how to make better beer and wine in the future.

We judge the entries the Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the fair, and your entries are displayed at the Fairgrounds for the entire 10 days the fair is going on.  You can pick up your bottles and ribbons the Tuesday after the fair, here at the store.

We Need Judges Too!
fair judging
While entering your beer and wine in the fair is exciting and fun, being a judge is a very educational experience.

Yes, I have lots of people who think this looks like a great way to drink free booze.  But the reality of judging, is that you drink very small quantities of about 10 different entries over the course of about 2 and 1/2 hours.

Almost every first time judge is initially worried that they don't know how to judge, but leave at the end of the evening feeling pretty confident in their ability to evaluate beer and wine.

And you will most certainly have fun!

We provide you with scoring sheets that make judging easier, and typically pair 3 judges together, with an experienced judge on each team, that help guide the virgins through the process.

If  you are interested in being a judge, be sure to let Steve know you want to do it!  Call the store, or Email Steve.

Malbec Syrah
Grand Cru Argentina Malbec Syrah
New - Grand Cru International German Muller-Thurgau and  Argintina Malbec Syrah

Wine kits are a great way for new wine makers to get started in this wonderful hobby.  Wine kits are available all year, and are very easy to  make.  In about 6 weeks you can be bottling your wine, and drinking the sweeter wines in a few weeks.  Dryer wines require a few months aging before consuming.

You need a minimal amount of equipment to make wine kits, click here to see our starter wine equipment kit.  If you are already making beer or wine you would have most, if not all of this equipment.

Each kit makes 6 gallons of wine, which fills 30 if the 750 ML size standard bottles.  The wine kit includes every ingredient you need to make the wine, other than some additional water.

Spagnols has just released 2 new wines, an Argentina Malbec Syrah, and a German Muller-Thurgau in their International Grand Cru line of wine kits.

The Malbec Syrah is blended to create a wine with aromas of toast while fermentation on Shiraz "GenuWine" Winery Dried Grape Skins adds hints of cherry and dark fruit to the palate.  This kit sells for $99.99 ($3.33 per bottle!)

German Muller-Thurgau is medium in body with a delicate off-dry taste, this wine is balanced by mild acidity giving it a long-lasting finish. Offering unique flavors and an amazing aromatic, subtle, fruity perfume, it is at its best in the first flush of youth.  The Muller-Thurgau sells for $89.99 ($3.00 a bottle!)

Cobalt Blue Bottles are Back!

These 2 new
cobalt
1/2 liter and 1 liter Cobalt Blue E-Z Cap bottles
bottles are back, with a new twist!

The new cobalt blue bottles also can have a standard bottle cap crimped on the bottle.

They come in the 1/2 liter (17 ounce) and 1 liter (34 ounce) size.

They also are straight sided, so they can have a label attached to them.  The old bottles had wheat stalks on them as part of the mold, and were not label friendly.

The 1/2 liter sell for $3.49 each, or $32.99 for a case of 12.  The 1 liter sell for $4.29 each or $42.99 for a case of 12.

These bottles are great for beer, wine, soda or liqueurs!

red grapes Fresh Yakima Valley Grapes coming This Fall!

I recently visited the Yakima Valley, and found a grape farmer that fits my needs to sell fresh grapes to you this fall.

Varieties available are the usual suspects, with 6 white grapes and 6 red grapes available.

We will be selling them in 25 lb boxes.  It takes about 100 lbs to make 6 gallons of wine.  We will pick up the grapes in the Yakima Valley, and you can then pick them up here at the store.  We will offer crushing and pressing services as part of the program.

There are early ripening grapes, that typically are harvested in late September to early October.   These grapes are:
  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Gewurztraminer
  • Pinot Gris
  • Merlot
  • Lemberger

The late ripening grapes, that are harvested about mid to late October, are:

  • Chenin Blanc
  • Riesling
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Syrah
  • Sangiovese (in short supply)
This growing season is off to a late start, so it is likely that the above dates will be a bit later this year.

We will be selling these grapes on a "Prepaid Pre-Order" basis.   Pricing for this years crop has not yet been established, and should be established about the end of August.  We will send out another newsletter at that time with firm pricing.

Based on last years pricing, the 25 lb. boxes will vary from about $36 to $46.
