Meet our Staff

Steve's Blogg

Time for more beer!

We have some new Citra hops, Munich malt
extract and an expanded hop selection with
some great news.

After 2 years of market turmoil, hop prices
have fallen back to reasonable levels.

We also have started buying direct from Great
Western Malting, and are able to offer
significantly lower prices on base malts.

Vancouver's Great Western 2-row is now down
to 89 cents a pound, or $39.50 for a 50 lb bag.

We will soon have a huge variety of hop
rhizomes, along with growing instructions to help you grow your own.

Like previous years, we again are accepting
pre-orders for hop rhizomes.

Cheers!

hop flower New - Citra Hops

Citra is a new, moderately-high acid cross between Hallertau Mittelfreuh, U.S. Tettnanger, Bavarian, Brewers Gold and E.K. Golding.  It has a very fruity flavor, with lots of the citrus flavors, but minimal grapefruit.

We have Citra in pellet form only, with 1 ounce selling for $2.49

Used in Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA and strong American and Belgian ales.   This should be a great hop to use to give your IPA's and other bitter beers a new twist.

munich Munich Malt Extract Syrup

Munich malt extract is made from 50% Munich malt and 50% base malt, and gives your beer a nice, malty bread flavor not easily obtained with specialty malts.

This malt extract is perfect for making the Oktoberfest, Vienna, Bock and Dopplebock styles.

I can't wait to make some beer!
Lower Grain and Hop Prices!

After 2 years of market turmoil and poor growing conditions, malt and hop prices have again stabilized at prices you might have been used too in 2008.   Yea!
great western
The hop shortage is over, and that means greater availability of hops, and reduced pricing.  We now sell hops at $2.49 for a 1 ounce bag, and $4.99 for a 2 ounce bag.   Our whole leaf hops are typically in a 2 ounce bag, and pellet hops in 1 ounce bags.

Malted barley prices also spiked 2 years ago because of a poor crop in Australia and Europe, and a significant increase in corn being planted in barley field fields due to the increase in ethanol production.

Both of those factors are having less impact today, and prices have gone back down again.   Plus we now are buying direct from Great Western Malting here in Vancouver, and are able to secure better pricing on base malts, especially Great Western 2-row, Belgian Pilsner, German Pilsner and British Marris Otter pale.
