BATTLESHIP

It's a ride...

by Shelby Jones

INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR PETER BERG -CLICK HERE TO LISTEN NOW.

BATTLESHIP is a ride I tell ya. From the start, it feels a little slow and somewhat teen oriented. But as the film progresses, the film quickly assembles its parts and starts to tell an action- packed, somewhat scary adventure on the open sea.

Some NASA nerds send a signal out and guess what, someone hears it and decide, hey, let's go down there and see what these folks are up to. The brilliantly designed aliens arrive in the ocean with 125th century like fighting vessels ready to rob earth of our resources and basically kick our ass.

In their way stands Rihanna (don't laugh) because Rihanna is a bright spot in the film. She delivers lines like she has been acting for quite some time. Our team is led by Taylor Kitsch (Alex Hopper), a go hard kid pushed into the NAVY by his tight attitude brother. One of director Peter Berg's best decisions is that unlike many military/fighting films, BATTLESHIP does not make the American some unstoppable force of brains, fighting and abs. In BATTLESHIP, the Japanese and others are united with the U.S. to stop an enemy that seems invincible. For special effects fans, you will love it. The fight scenes, intense hand-to-hand combat and of course the battleships and destroyers make for pulse pounding visual fun.

One thing I was a bit surprised about was how the film rebounded from what seemed to be too much adrenaline made for youth. Of course it celebrates the pride and passion of the U.S. Navy, but it also showcases resolve, faith, will, and the united human philosophy of yes I can get this done.

Overall, the film is a lot of fun. Total popcorn poppin' sit back and say, "oh shit" type of film. Constantly presenting situations where a response is necessary the film does a wonderful job combining the "greatest generation" of sailors to help the modern NAVY get it done.
I won't spoil the fun by telling you that one of the greatest lines in the film is not YOU SANK MY BATTLESHIP, but a modern day elder using some very modern language that means good, day, take this you...(FILL IN BLANK).

You will know when you hear it. Take the family. It's a lot of fun and PG-13.

Synopsis: "Chernobyl Diaries" is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, "Paranormal Activity." The film follows a group of six young vacationers who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme tour" guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...

Screening Weds. 5/30- 7:00pm at AMC 34th Street

SYNOPSIS:

What price would you pay for freedom? In the exhilarating action epic FOR GREATER GLORY an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, as the film's adventure unfolds against the long-hidden, true story of the 1920s Cristero War - the daring people's revolt that rocked 20th Century North America.

Academy AwardŽ nominee Andy Garcia headlines an acclaimed cast as General Gorostieta, the retired military man who at first thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war. Yet the man who hesitates in joining the cause will soon become the resistance's most inspiring and self-sacrificing leader, as he begins to see the cost of religious persecution on his countrymen . . . and transforms a rag-tag band of rebels into a heroic force to be reckoned with. The General faces impossible odds against a powerful and ruthless government. Yet it's those he meets on the journey - youthful idealists, feisty renegades and, most of all, one remarkable teenager named Jose - who, reveal to him how courage and belief are forged even when justice seems lost.
