Grand Lake Montessori Announces April 27th, 2012
Teacher Appreciation Week
Monday, April 30-Friday, May 4
We would like to appreciate all of the GLM teachers by hosting three events this year: a breakfast on April 30th, a lunch of May 1st, and a Happy Hour on Friday to end the week! You can click the link below to sign up for one (or all!) of the 3 school-wide events and show your appreciation for our wonderful teachers. Since many of the spaces are full, you can still come and help out, and socialize with the teachers, or simply bring a dish.
As always, we encourage families to show their appreciation for our GLM teachers in a way that has meaning for their families. These school-wide events are not meant to limit anyone's ability or interest in expressing more individualized appreciation for teachers.
If you have any questions about the 3 school-wide events, please e-mail Gabby Rosi, Parent Volunteer Coordinator, at gabbyrosi@mac.com

International Day
Wednesday, May 9th
International Day is a cultural celebration of our global family. It happens during the school day and parents do not attend. There are, however, many volunteer opportunities both before and on the day of. Each class represents a continent of the world and is responsible for setting up a "booth" on the school yard. The day begins at 9am with a dance performance in which the children presents a folk dance from their continent. After the performance they are invited to travel the yards on their own exploring the different continent booths of the world. They receive a "passport" and have a bag that they have made to carry their crafts and food. They do not have to be with an adult to move around the yards and love the freedom and independence they have to "travel the world". It's an exciting morning of culture and international adventure!

Camellia
We have had an exciting week at Camellia including the Boxtales performance that the children really loved! We have another exciting event coming up - International Day on May 9th. Each classroom represents a continent and we work with the children to provide food and fare from that continent. Our continent is North America and we need a lot of parent helpers Wednesday, May 9th from 9-11am. Please let us know if you can help, we would greatly appreciate it! |
Gingko
Thank you Ginkgo families for a lovely Special Friends Night. It was very heart warming to watch how excited the children were to share the classroom with you. We saw pride and love in the children's eyes as they invited you into the classroom and shared their favorite activities. This love of learning is something the teachers experience on a daily basis and we were so happy you were able to share it with us. Now our energies will be focused on our garden, International Day and other end of the year activities. |
Jacaranda
Somebody in Jacaranda labeled every country in Africa! A few of the third years have taken on this challenge and are enjoying getting to know all the unusual sounding names of the countries: Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Djibouti and Swaziland, which they think is the most fun to say. We also learned that people in Swaziland (and South Africa) call traffic lights, robots! Other interesting facts about Africa: giraffes have purple tongues, the water goes down the drain in the opposite direction and there are different constellations in the night sky! |
Juniper
In preparation for hosting their friends at Special Friends night, the children were perfecting their skills by using many materials in the classroom. They used material like: Africa puzzle map, word building, food preparation, and metal insets. Through our Special Friends Night, we were all able to see how important special friends are. We thank you for your concern and understanding. Thank you for the conversations that stimulate our brains, for the silly times we laugh out loud, for all the time you spend with us, and all the kind thoughts you send. Thank you for being a very special friend and allowing us to be your host. |
Live Oak
We all had such a wonderful time watching your children working with their Special Friends in the classroom. It is always so amazing to see how they present their room and their favorite activities to their guests. We had a wonderful assembly with a story from the Boxtales theatre group. Ask your child about the story of the Hero Twins. There were amazing masks and acting, and the children really enjoyed working together to retell the tale later in the day. Go to their website for more info. Our outdoor play has become very intriguing as children have embraced our movable parts like shells, baskets, and river rocks. The children have wonderful imaginations and also enjoy mimicking their parents, using shells as cellphones! If you have any additional baskets, small old pots and pans, or collections of pretty stones or shells to donate we would be happy to take them in. |
Magnolia
There has been a buzz of excitement in the Magnolia classroom. The children were very enthusiastic and proud to share some of their favorite works with their special friends. Some children commented that they want to share longer works because it requires more focus and concentration. Magnolia has also been fascinated with learning about the planets. The Family of the Sun has been a popular choice to sing in the class. One child has decided to make models of the planets using metal insets and his own creativity. The teachers want to thank you for your continued support and helping us adjust to the new pick up procedures. |
Mulberry
This week we added insect cards to the classroom. We've also been working on "how to observe someone's work" in Grace and Courtesy. Outside we've been searching for insects. At circle we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and have been singing The Tiny Caterpillar. Words to the song are "The tiny caterpillar crawled upon a leaf. Spun a little chrysalis then fell fast asleep. While she was sleeping she dreamt that she could fly. Later when she woke up she was a butterfly. Reminder to bring sunscreen for your child.
