Return of Faye Owens

Mariana Bissonnette is an active member of the Camellia team when she is not commuting to Palo Alto to complete her Montessori teaching credential. Lead teacher Danny Tien and support teacher Grace Mollel gracefully operate the classroom with these intermittent absences. When Mariana Bissonnette is absent doing student teaching, Somsy Phonexaysitthidet has been her stand-in. We are adjusting her duties and transferring her to a 3 to 6 Montessori classroom, Juniper, as Mr. Ettenreich is leaving in mid-November.  We are happy to have Faye Owens return to GLM and work in Camellia.

Faye Owens has worked at GLM for over 20 years. She departed last year to care for her mother out-of-state. She has been a floating teacher substitute in every classroom, and sometimes brings in special art activities for the children. The GLM staff welcomes her return to the school. If you have not met her subbing in Mulberry or Camellia, please ask to be introduced.

Sincerely,
Helen Campbell
Head of School

We have had such a wonderful festive October. We have carved Jack-o-Lanterns, had a wonderful Halloween celebration and are beginning to care for our environments for the fall - raking leaves, clearing out the apple tree, and much more. We look forward to the next few months of festivities to share with the children and their families. We have had a bit of a cold in our class and we wish anyone who has been under the weather the best of health to return to school!

Gingko

This month we will be studying  frogs, North America, and sciences properties. The first of the science properties being hot and cold. We wash our dishes in warm water and rinse in cold. We will also explore sink and float and objects that are magnetic. Many of these properties are objects that we can find in our envirnoment. As we explore children will also be invited to bring objects from home.  If you have an interesting artifact from your family's travels in North America, please consider sharing with the classroom for the month.

Jacaranda

Thank you to all who made the time to meet with Ms. Leck this week. It is very informative for us to hear from you and always feels so collaborative for us to discuss the different aspects of your child's day together. To end the week we celebrated the holiday of Dias de los Muertos with Ana, Eva's Mom. We decorated an offrenda/altar and then placed photos of loved ones and pets on it.  Ana talked to us a little about some of the traditions of the holiday. She bought us Bread of the Dead or Pan de Muerto to eat for snack. It had a little bit of sugar on the top to remind us of the sweetness of life!

Halloween at GLM will always provide great memories for all children. What a great way to build community in the name of dress-up and hands-on fun! As the week started the children began working on Grace and Courtesy in small groups during class time. Between the ages of 3yrs. -6yrs., the child is indeed in a sensitive period for this kind of learning. We used "role play" and "model" presentations during the exercises. The children enjoy participating with their peers and teachers; they simply feel good when they are doing things in peace and good manners.

Live Oak

In the spirit of the season, the children guessed how many seeds were in our class' pumpkin. Guesses ranged from 0 to 100,001,000. How many do YOU think there were? Children have been making books of the parts of the fish, with the oldest children drawing their own fish before coloring and labeling the parts (the younger children used a pre-printed picture of a fish). I hope you've heard your child singing the continent song because we've been working hard at learning the names of all the continents during October, and most of the children have got it down!

Magnolia

This week Magnolia has been particularly focused on caring for the classroom environment.  The children have potted a few new plants and used a decorator's eye to place them on shelves.  We worked cooperatively as a team to fold a large pile of laundry and successfully restocked our linen shelf.  We have also been learning about the world at large by first discussing the various continents; and we are now specifically focused on our own continent. From beautifying our classroom to singing North American folk songs, Magnolia has been engaged with our immediate and outer environment.

Mulberry

With the cooler weather morning drop off has been in the classroom. Here are a few reminders about inside drop off: Enter through the kitchen door, the sign in sheet is on the counter. Have a quiet good bye in the kitchen in order to not disrupt the children who are engaged in the class. If you need help with your goodbye quietly signal a teacher for help. Class starts at 8:45 and we ask that all children are here by then. It is very disruptive to have children coming in all morning. If you are going to be late or absent, please call the office. Mulberry class is looking for a parent who would like to help with gardening with the children. If you would like to help talk to Mrs. Aima.
