In the Know about Legislation
In Florida, practicing interior design in commercial settings without a license constitutes a misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail, however this might change.
A few months ago, we wrote about the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholding this Florida law in the case of Eva Locke, et al v. Joyce Shore, et al.
The plaintiffs in the petition argued that the Florida law prohibits aspiring interior designers from "offering even harmless advice about such mundane subjects as the placement of office furniture." However, proponents of the law feel that an interior designer's suggestions can dictate structural and engineering decisions that affect building integrity and personal safety.
What you, interior designers should know is that, last month a group of unlicensed interior designers filed a writ of certiorari with the United States Supreme Court to appeal the 11th U.S Circuit Court of Appeals decision.
In the coming months, the Supreme Court will make a decision on whether they will hear the case. If they do, this may overturn the current law. Stay tuned. |

Design Quote of the Month:
"That's been one of my mantras -- focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end, because once you get there, you can move mountains."
