Buildings that Make Us Fit
Moving towards a Culture of Stair Use
Melissa Visconti has been working on exploring the how taking the stairs in the workplace may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and the role that building design plays in this. The purpose of the study is to try to understand how the workplace environment can influence opportunities for physical activity. ECHA's "stair culture" is one element architects incorporated in the building's design to foster a culture of wellness.

Welcome U

Welcome

While the fall term may seem far away, planning for the annual Welcome to U is well under way.  This event has been a great success with students for the past several years largely because of the time volunteered by members of the Board of Governors, the Senate, the Alumni Council, and staff from across campus.  Once again we invite you to join us September 4th and 5th as we welcome our new and returning students.

Because the student response has been so positive in the past, this year's Welcome to U will be much the same as in previous years, with volunteers greeting students and handing out treats, prizes and information.

Please let us know if you can join us in welcoming students this September by completing the online form
by August 24, 2012.

Sincerely,
Frank Robinson
Vice-Provost and Dean of Students

UofA Library

Prepare for the Fall term with your librarian!

  • Writing a Grant Proposal? The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) applications often require a librarian to be included on grant proposals through the Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP).  Librarians conduct the literature searches for applicants and assist with writing. Librarians could also help researchers prepare their common CV for this process using resources like the Canadian Common CV.
  • Coordinating a Journal Club? Librarians can help to coordinate journal clubs used in the education of graduate or professional students, or participate in journal clubs pertaining to health sciences education.
  • Developing a Course Curriculum? Librarians can provide library orientation/info lit sessions during curriculum classes. At a higher level librarians can assist in developing information-related curriculum for students. For example, the Faculty of Medicine Liaison Librarians led some of the discovery learning blocks in medicine. They can assist in assessment of curriculum/assignments; find ways to incorporate evidence- based practice, and grade assignments.

Contact your liaison librarian today!

Our new web site was launched Aug 7!

Librarian on Site - For the duration of the Fall term,a librarian will be available in ECHA for two hours each weekday to answer your information questions.  Time and location to be determined.

Nutrition Tip

Vitamin E:  Look for it in Foods

Vitamin E has long been touted as "The Fountain of Youth."  While no vitamin can prevent aging, vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant which helps to protect the cells in our bodies from the ravages of day to day living.  Good food sources of vitamin E include nuts, seeds, avocado, vegetable oils and wheat germ.  Some dark leafy greens and fish are also sources of vitamin E.
