Ask Irena Buka - it happens to her frequently. "My patients are children (0-16yrs) who present with illnesses that are possibly environmentally related. Often their parents ask questions I can't answer, or have never even thought about," says Dr. Buka. "Environmental health is such a new area, we have so much to learn, so many questions that want answers." more.... |

U of A Grows Dead Grass
But we are still maintaining Lawn and Order

Have you noticed the semi-dead sod near ECHA's north east entrance recently? Well don't be sod about it because we put it there for a reason! Installing dead sod helps suppress weeds, and provides a perfect environment for new plants. It's more sustainable than fabric and will allow the new seed "plugs" to germinate more easily. It's important that the sod is completely dead or it might try to compete with our new, very special landscape. The new ground cover is a combination of grass and perennial species - all of which are native to the Parkland Region (learn more) And yes- it will be green! Introducing these plants to an urban setting will help preserve our native and adaptive species. Once our new Prairie Grass reaches maturity it will be almost completely self-sustaining. Lawn care will be less of a pain in the grass from now on!

Construction in ECHA

Pedway
The U of A Project Management Office has started preparing for the connection between the Edmonton Clinic South Pedway and ECHA.
PCL has hoarded off areas in the south east corners of ECHA Level 1 and Level 2. A hoarding plan has been provided to show the exact locations.
The hoarding is expected to be up for the remainder of the project (mid-December, 2012) Shortly after installation of the hoarding, PCL will begin to remove exterior glazing panels. More detailed information, including dates and noise expectations, will follow.
Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) Reception Area
There will be hoarding in place around the HSERC reception area and Level 2 at the end of July; it will remain in place until construction in his area is finished at the end of August.

BureaucraZy
What is life really like for vulnerable populations accessing health and social service in Edmonton? Think you know? Want to know more?
The Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth and Families (CUP) and Families First Edmonton (FFE) have created an important documentary film that presents the personal perspectives of Albertans who face obstacles accessing health and social services in Alberta.
BureaucraZy profiles four single mothers with low incomes; each volunteered to share her experience in accessing health and social services in Alberta. It's about real parents and children in our community talking about every day issues.
 | | BureaucraZy: Navigating Health and Social Services in Alberta |
The film challenges assumptions about low-income women; the role of government in supporting vulnerable people; and the values we bring to our understanding of these communities.
The team has created an online resource page for both instructors and students to help use this film in the classroom. It includes background information on the video, the link to the video, and a discussion guide.

Don't Feed the Thieves
Did you know that theft is the number one problem for Protective Service on campus? Identifying thieves and getting them off campus goes a long way to making your property safer; an even better strategy is to discourage criminals from showing up in the first place. How do we do that? By making sure our belongings are secure at all times. Away from your desk "just for a few seconds"? That's all it takes for someone to slip your wallet into their pocket, tuck your laptop into a backpack, or grab your ipad, tuck it under an arm and walk casually out of the building! Don't take chances. Let's work together to make ECHA a huge waste of time and energy for thieves everywhere.
And remember, if you see suspicious activity anywhere on campus call 780-492-5050.
Visit Protective Services web site for more info.

Nutrition Tip
Breakfast - Eat Up to Keep Weight Down
We often hear that, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day." What we don't always realize is that the benefits of breakfast include making it easier to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Breakfast helps to satisfy hunger and curb over-eating later in the day which, in turn, can help to keep your calorie intake in check. In addition, breakfast can boost your metabolic rate (the rate you burn calories from food). Aim to start each day with a breakfast than contains foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups from Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide.
