Dr Julio Frenk visits ECHA Dr. Julio Frenk is the Dean of the Faculty and T&G Angelopoulos professor of Public Health and International Development at the Harvard School of Public Health. On Friday, June 8th, Dr. Frenk recevied an honourary doctor of science degree from the University of Alberta in recognition of his outstanding contributions. We were very pleased to take Dr. Frenk on a tour of ECHA, after which he met with the Health Sciences Council's interprofessional health education team at HSERC and with the School of Public Health. "This (ECHA) is an impressive facility," he said, "you are very, very fortunate." We couldn't agree more. |

The University of Alberta Evidence-based Practice Centre will be hosting the 7th "Putting Evidence into Practice" (PEP) Workshop at the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, June 20 - 22nd, 2012.
What is Putting Evidence into Practice?
Evidence-based practice involves applying evidence to clinical and policy decision making. Critical appraisal provides the tools to assess the quality of evidence in the medical literature and to determine the risks and benefits of different management strategies. Through this trans-disciplinary workshop participants will work through relevant examples in order to develop skills in searching for and identifying appropriate evidence, critically appraising the evidence, and applying the evidence to your area of expertise.
Whether you are interested in learning more about knowledge synthesis or enhancing your critical appraisal skills, you will benefit from the expertise of your group's facilitators and librarian. Small groups will focus on different methods for knowledge synthesis, and different levels and topics of critical appraisal. Participants from all disciplines and all learning levels will benefit from this workshop.
There are several small groups to choose from:
- Critical Appraisal ~ Basic, Intermediate and Advanced
- Critical Appraisal of Economic Evaluations
- Systematic Reviews
- Advanced Methods for Systematic Reviews
- GRADE
- Rapid Reviews
- Knowledge Translation
For more information or to register, please refer to our website at www.pep.ualberta.ca or contact the workshop coordinators, Kerri Munchinsky or Christine Ens at pep@med.ualberta.ca

Nutrition Tip
Meeting Your Fluid Needs
Older adults can find it challenging to take in the recommended amounts of water and other fluids needed for good health. Nutrition experts currently advice women over the age of 51 to take in 2.7 L of fluid each day, while older men should aim for 3.7 L of fluid/day. Hit these targets by sipping water throughout the day and by enjoying water, milk or soy beverage with your meals. Fresh fruits and vegetables also provide us with fluid. Enjoy at least one serving of vegetables and fruits at each meal or snack.
