Maybe it was the late -night studying? This student found ECHA a very relaxing environment on the second day of classes, Fall 2011.
Welcome Students!
On September 6th, classes got under way in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy. With over 3000 student seats available ECHA will provide classroom space for literally thousands of University of Alberta students every day. Good thing students were involved in designing the space! A large bright reading room on L1, quiet and silent study spaces throughout the lower three floors and sunny seating areas with comfy couches along the east side of Main Street are already proving popular! Twelve student associations will be moving into the Student Commons in the next few weeks.

Important information about cell phones in ECHA

If you're working or studying in ECHA you already know that your cell phone coverage is sporadic, only near the windows or, for some services, nonexistent.  Cell phone providers including Rogers, Bell and Telus are aware of the situation and are working on providing us with a solution as soon as possible. Most cell phones will work near the windows. In an emergency situation, please leave the building by the nearest exit. Once outdoors, your cell phone reception should be available. We do understand the urgency of this and look forward to a solution in the near future.

Can I have a locker in ECHA?

lockersinECHAECHA lockers are allocated to designated health faculties and departments who will manage the lockers and distribute  locks to their students. Only students designated by these faculties and departments have access to ECHA lockers.

Why aren't there more plugins for laptops?

pluginsforlaptopsIn most areas of ECHA there is a standard number of plugins available. The lecture theatres have more, with plugs for each seat. The quiet and silent study areas have higher numbers of plugs per seat than the open seating along main street.

What amenities are provided in the nutrition nooks?

amenitiesnutritionnooksNutrition nooks provided for occupant groups on Levels 1 to 5 will have refrigerators, microwaves, hot beverage facilities with coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and of course sinks for dishes. Dishwashers are located in the larger serveries and atrium nooks only. Occupants should plan to bring, and take care of their own dishes and cutlery.

Can I get access to the dentistry lab later in the day?

labaccessAccess to labs is controlled by individual faculties and departments. If you are a staff member and require after hours access, please check with your faculty.

Will there be microwaves in nutrition nooks for students?

studentmicrowavesThere are currently no microwaves or refrigerators  for students or the public in ECHA; we encourage students to contact the Students Union to pursue this option.

Can I book a study room? How do I get the code for the key pads?

groupstudykeypadsRight now there is no booking system for the study rooms, and the keypads have not been activated. These spaces are freely available for use by all students.

There don't seem to be enough recycling and garbage bins. Will there be more?

recyclingbinsYes. These items were back-ordered from the supplier and will be installed just as soon as possible.

When can we get to the upper three floors to see our space?

accesstoupperfloorsTo ensure work progresses on schedule, we are limiting access to unfinished areas of the building. Furniture is being assembled and installed, and a number of deficiencies are being addressed. Occupant groups will be informed by their ECHA Working Group APO as to when these spaces will be ready. There will be considerable information available for occupant groups in the next two months. In the meantime, we will upload photos of typical finished spaces as they are available.

Who do I call for technical assistance with AV and IT issues in classrooms?

avassistanceFor assistance with AV in lecture theatres, classrooms and seminar rooms, please contact AICT Classroom Technologies. They are located in ECHA L1-261 or by calling 492-8436.

Why aren't tables in the seminar rooms movable?

seminarroomtablesTo ensure the cords from the AV equipment could be secured and would not be jostled loose, it was necessary to join tables together. We are, however, investigating the possibility of making some of these tables movable.
