News from Double Ewe

June 6, 2012

Two big things happening at the shop this week:  WWKIP Day is on Saturday, and we're having a SALE!  We've also got some knitting inspiration for you, and some news about my vacation plans this summer.  Read on!
World Wide Knit In Public Day

It's finally here!  Our 6th Annual WWKIP Day celebration is This Saturday, June 9th,  from 1:00 - 5:00.  Grab your lawn chair and cone join us for a fun time!  Here's the official scoop:

Who:
  You!
Where:  On the sidewalk in front of the shop.
When:  Saturday, June 9th, from 1:00 - 5:00
Why:  For fun!  We'll be gathering on the sidewalk in front of the shop, so there will be plenty of shade.  It's fun to see the reactions we get from people passing by.  We knit, crochet, talk, laugh, and snack.  To make it even more fun, there will be prize drawings and giveaways, too.  Fun!
What to bring:  A lawn chair, your current project, sunscreen (in case you choose to sit in the sun).  I'll be providing beverages and some snacks, but if you'd like to bring a snack to share with the group, you're more than welcome to, but it's certainly not required.
The background:  WWKIP Day is a day when knitters get together and knit right out in public.  If you want to read about the origins of WWKIP Day, you can visit the website that started it all.

BOGOHO Sale!

We're doing it again:  this is our Second Annual BOGOHO Sale.  Last year I learned that not everyone knows what a BOGOHO is.  We need to fix that.   Here's the scoop:

When?

Thursday, June 7th to Saturday, June 9th.

Thur:    10am - 6pm
Friday:  10am - 5pm
Saturday:  9am - 5pm
What's the deal?
  • BOGOHO on around 60 select yarns!
    BOGOHO
stands for Buy One Get One Half Off
.  No limits - for each skein you buy at full price, you'll get a second skein of the same yarn at half price.  Buy one, get one half off; buy two, get two half off, and so on.  The fine print:  discount applies when buying two (or more) skeins of the same yarn, but different colors are okay; in other words, the discount does not apply when buying single skeins of the selected yarns.  When buying in pairs, it works out to be a 25% discount - a great deal!
  • All single patterns are 50% off.  Yup, half price.  Can't beat that.  (Excludes Ravelry In-Store Patterns)
  • All books 20% off.
  • 20% off all in-stock knitting bags & baskets (includes Jordanna Paige, Namaste, Blue Q, Bagsmith and Baskets).
Vacation?

In years past, Double Ewe has closed for a week in the summer so we can take a little vacation.  Usually I let you know well ahead of time when we're going to be closed.   This summer, we are planning on closing for a bit, probably for a week, but I'm afraid I can't tell you exactly when that will be. Why?  We're waiting for my grandson to be born!  So, here's the plan:

1.  His due date is July 4th.  So, he'll probably come anywhere between June 20th - July 18th.

2.  When I get the word that he's on his way, I need to hit the road and head down to Rochester to take care of Davian. (You  know...the girl at the end of my emails...the Big Sis.)

3.  This may happen mid-day, so we'll have to just play it by ear.  I may have to close early when I get the phone call.

4.  Once he's born (yay!), I'll send out an email, letting you know that we're closed, and letting you know the date we'll be back open.  As I said, I'm anticipating being gone for about a week.

Sorry this is so loosie-goosie, but I hope you understand.  Babies don't follow schedules, and my grandma duties call.  :)

Fresh Off The Needles
My goal this summer is to inspire you to knit a bit in the summer...maybe not as much as you usually do, but at least a bit.  Here are a few suggestions.

PatternDaydream Shawlettes by
Yarn:  Balance by O-Wool, 50% Organic Wool/50% Organic Cotton, two skeins
Comments:  Balance is a great yarn for warm-weather knitting.  It's half wool (making it wonderful to knit with), but it's cotton content makes it feel much cooler in your hands.

I loved the pattern - beautiful in it's simplicity, fairly mindless to knit, great for daydreaming.  Even better, it contains a basic version, plus three variations.  As you can see in the photos, it can be worn several ways.  Pretty.

The pattern can be purchased on Ravelry, or if you're not a Ravelry user or simply don't like to make purchases online, you can buy it at Double Ewe.  Your choice.

--------------------

PatternCardigan With Frill from Cascade
Yarn:  Kid Merino from Crystal Palace
Comments:  Tami gets the credit for this one, and it's gorgeous.  The pattern is a freebie from Cascade Yarns, and it's knit in a laceweight mohair yarn, and we have several yarn choices in lots of colors.  Knitted on a larger-than-usual needle (most of it uses a size 9), it's a quick, very lightweight garment.

Pattern:  Baby Cardi from Textured Yarn Company
Yarn:  Florafil, 100% cotton, two skeins
Comments:  If you're looking for a quick baby gift, look no further.  Textured yarn company offers bunches of patterns written specifically for this beautiful yarn: hats, scarves, shawls, sweaters, and more.  Now, the patterns aren't downloadable, however they're free of charge when purchasing the yarn.

PatternCabled Teddy Hat
Yarn:  Cascade 220 Superwash Sport
Comments:  My sister-in-law showed me this pattern, and I just had to make it!  The pattern offers a wide range of sizes, from newborn to large child/small adult.  Of course I had to make the newborn size - it's super cute and tiny, but so are newborns.

The Cabled Teddy Hat pattern can be purchased on Ravelry, but like the Daydream Shawlettes above, it can also be purchased at Double Ewe.

Knittervention!

This month's Knittervention! will be June 15th.  Knittervention is our once-a-month, Friday-night-potluck-get-together.   We do this the third Friday of every month, from 6:30 - 10:00.   For the whole scoop, please click here

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too.  "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either. ;)

Open Knitting & Crochet

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required - just show up.  We have three times a week you can join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 4:30
  • Saturdays, 9:00 - noon

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For more dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice, Knit Along with Ann or The Workshop classes.  Details one these classes can be found here.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
