News from Double Ewe December 5, 2011 |
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!
Are you getting your Christmas knitting finished? If you need a place to hunker down and knit, away from your loved ones, join us for one of our open knitting times (they're listed at the end of this newsletter). We don't have any Saturday classes scheduled in December, so the back room is wide open all day on Saturdays in December.
At the bottom of this newsletter, you'll find a coupon for 10% off any Knit Picks Interchangeable Needles set: we've got the Harmony (wood), Options (nickle-plated), and Zephyr (acrylic), and we're well-stocked! Cut out the coupon, and put it on your spouse's pillow...just a gentle hint for a great gift. The coupon is good until the middle of January...so if you're lucky enough to get a Double Ewe gift certificate, you can make it go even farther.
Please make a note of our holiday hours below. In the past, we've closed for the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, but this year we're changing it up a bit. We'll just be closed a couple of extra days during that week to rest, regroup, and spend some time with our family.

New Stuff
Jitterbug from Collinette

I'm so excited to add this yarn to my selection. Jitterbug is a high twist, 100% merino fingering weight yarn - it makes gorgeous socks, as well as many other lightweight projects. The colors are...well...breathtaking. And it comes in generous 150 gram/400 yard hanks - enough for just about anybody's socks! Here's more: ------------------------------------------------ Caligraphy from Colinette
Very soft, thick 'n thin, hand dyed in the gorgeous colors Colinette is so well known for. This is a chunky weight yarn that would make a gorgeous last minute present: a scarf, cowl, hat...your choice. 100 grams of 100% wool. Perfect.
----------------------------------------------- Alp Dazzle & Alp Premier from Feza
How do I describe these two yarns? It's difficult...you really need to see them in person. Simply put, each skein is a variety of lovely, dazzling yarns with different fibers and textures, linked together. With one skein, you can make a striking scarf such as the one pictured below, or let you imagination run wild and come up with your own creation. (The Dazzle Lacy Arrowhead Scarf is a free pattern from Feza Yarns.)
--------------------------------------------------- Alp Virgin & Alp Natural These two yarns are similar to the Alp Dazzle and Alp Premier in that each skein is a combination of yarn styles & textures. However in these two, they're comprised of natural fibers. Alp Natural is a warm-weather, slightly lighter weight version made of mostly cotton & linen, and Alp Virgin is mostly wool & mohair fibers. From texture to texture, the color changes are more subtle than in the Alp Premier & Alp Dazzle, so they're a bit more subdued. You can see what I did with Alp Virgin in the Fresh Off The Needles section below...and the pattern's free! --------------------------------------------------- Night, Mesmerize and Festival from Feza Yarns If you're looking to add a little bit of sparkle to your knitting, these are the yarns for you. Wouldn't a sparkly shawl be a pretty addition to your wardrobe? Night from Feza Mesmerize from Feza

Fresh Off The Needles
I spent a good portion of the past month with personal knitting...meaning not-for-the-shop knitting. The main project was a cute, sort of Christmasy/Valentines-Day-ish dress for my granddaughter, Davian. I had a hard time getting a decent photo of it...but if I get a better one of it on her, I'll share it in the future.
Davian's Dress Yarn: Worsted Merino Superwash from Plymouth Yarns Pattern: Fiber Trends CH29 - Sisters, Jumper for Toddlers Comments: A cute, drop waisted jumper with a lace pattern along the bottom that forms a zig-zag hem. A fun to knit pattern with nice details.
-------------------------------------
Hannah's Scarf

This is the pattern I came up with when the Alp Virgin arrived (and it would work for the Alp Natural as well). It's sort of like a triangle, but really a V-shaped scarfy/shawly accessory. I think it's cute worn both forwards or backwards. Get the pattern here.

Wing It
by KellyOn a Friday afternoon in November, I had a hankerin' to knit up a hat for my granddaughter, Davian. I knew what I wanted it to look like, but wanted to use a super chunky yarn and I didn't have a pattern for it, so I just winged it. This is what I came up with. It was a very quick knit - I finished it that evening. And it was sort of freeing...just knitting away, not taking any notes as I went...I didn't need to, I was just going to knit one little hat. That's why it's called "Wing It". A week later, one of my favorite people in the world (you know who you are ;) wanted to make it for some Christmas gifts, so I wrote up the pattern in three children's sizes. It's cute with or without the flowers, great for boys or girls. Pattern: Wing It - free on my website here. Yarn: De Aire from Plymouth Yarn (or any super-chunky yarn) Needles: size 15 - 16" circulars and DPN's |

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too. "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either. ;)
