News from Double Ewe

September 5th 2011

Wow, October 5th...fall is really rolling by quick!  With today's weather, it might not feel like it, but the holidays are right around the corner.  If you're planning on doing any holiday knitting, you'd better get started soon.  Not that I want to nag, but I'm just saying...

This fall, we made a big change at Double Ewe:  I'm no longer a one-woman-show!  Yay!  Tami started working for me a few weeks ago, and I can't believe how awesome it's been.  I wish I would have taken her photo today to share with  you, but alas, I didn't.  You'll just have to stop in the shop and say hi.  She'll be the one wearing this:
Fall Yarn Tastings!

Back by popular demand!  What is a yarn tasting?  Think wine tasting, but there's no wine...there's yarn!  It's a fun way to sample some new yarns, find out what you like, maybe what you don't like, and maybe what you love!  It's another excuse to enjoy the company of other knitters while testing out some of our new fall yarns.  You'll get samples of at least 10 yarns along with some other goodies.  You'll snack, chat, and swatch.  It's a really fun way to spend an evening!  We've got several tastings planned, but seating is limited, so sign up soon.  If you have a group of friends that would like to do a private tasting, give me a call (minimum of 6, maximum of 10).

When:

  • Thursday Oct 13th -or-
  • Friday Oct 28th

Time:  6:30 - 9:00

Cost:  $20

What to bring:  Knitting needles; you'll be sampling  yarns from lace weight up to chunky, so the suggested needles range from US1 to 11-ish.  So, bring the needles you have, but don't worry if you don't have every size - there will be loaner needles available.

How to sign up:  Seating is limited, so you need to register ahead of time by calling 763-780-2465, or you can stop in the shop.  Payment in full guarantees your spot in the tasting - if you can't get to the shop before the event, you can hold your spot by calling with a credit card.

New Stuff

Autunno from Di.Ve
Once upon a time, several years back, I carried Autunno.  This was back in my old location, and it was a casualty of my space constraints. But I've always had a soft spot in my heart for it - VERY soft merino, subtle changing colors, yum.  Flash forward a couple of years, and I got word that Autunno was being discontinued, but I was able to get some at a nicely reduced price.  So, while it lasts, I'm able to offer Autunno for $4.95/ball, as opposed to the $7.95 it was in the past.  I have quite a bit, but get it while you can!  You really have to see the colors in person.

Baby Boom from Fiesta Yarns
I LOVE this yarn.  It's a fingering-sport-ish weight bend of super soft merino with a touch of nylon (for strength) in gorgeous hand dyed colorways.  VERY, very, very sproingy and squishy.   It comes in generous 4-ounce skeins of 440 yards each, perfect for an incredible pair of socks, a shawl, sweater, scarf, gloves, hat, mittens, baby sweater, yada yada yada.  Did I mention it's sproingy?

Ballet from Fiesta Yarns

A 50/50 blend of Alpaca and Tencel, this yarn has a wonderful drape and incredible softness with the hand-dyed colorways Fiesta is well known for.  250 yards in each 4 ounce skein - it would be great for lots of one skein projects:  a cowl, fingerless gloves, a small shawl, a keyhole scarf ... lots of possibilities.  It just arrived last Friday, so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I've got some plans for it brewing.

Fantasia by Jojoland

A lot of people are familiar with Jojoland's Melody and Rhythm - marled with very gradual color changes, soft, superwash Merino in fingering and light worsted/dk weights.  Fun and affordable, they've been quite popular here.  Fantasia is their next new yarn in that family, only this time it's heavier weight...they actually call it "chunky", but I call it aran or heavy worsted.  This is just a sampling of the colors I have available...super cute.

Rayon Boucle by Fiesta

Again with the Fiesta!  This is an interesting yarn - 100% slinky, slubby rayon, it makes a lovely, elegant wrap, shawl or scarf.  Perfect for the upcoming holidays.  Absolutely gorgeous colors again, this time with a lovely sheen.  The shawl below is super easy.  And if you're wondering...boucle is pronounced "Boo-Clay"...at least that's how I say it.  :)

Fresh Off The Needles

Made Up Scarf

Sometimes I'm amazed at the gorgeous combinations of yarns I see customer put together - totally unrelated yarns that look like they were made for eachother; they turn into incredible scarves and shawls and more.  So I decided to try my hand at it last week.  I wandered around the shop and picked out 5 yarns:   worsted weight, lace weight, single ply, two ply, fuzzy mohair, solid, self-striping...they were a real mix.  Then I took a size 10 needle, cast on 240 stitches, and knit.  And knit.  I changed yarns willy-nilly with no real plan, sort of "as the Spirit moved me", and this is what I came up with.  I really like it.  I think I need to buy a new coat.

Knittervention!

This month's Knittervention! will be October 21st.  Knittervention is our once-a-month, Friday-night-potluck-get-together.  For the whole scoop, click here

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too.  "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either. ;)

Open Knitting & Crochet

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required - just show up.  We have three times a week you can join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 4:30
  • Saturdays, 9:00 - noon

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For more dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice, Knit Along with Ann or The Workshop classes.  Details one these classes can be found here.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
