September 5th 2011

It's Fall!  Yay!  Ok, maybe fall doesn't officially begin until the 23rd, but in my mind, fall starts the day after Labor Day.  To celebrate the change of seasons, we've included a coupon at the bottom of this email.  Don't miss out!

We're switching to our Fall hours starting tomorrow.  They're a tiny bit different than last year; here they are:
  • Tuesdays 10 am - 9 pm
  • Wednesdays 10 am - 8 pm
  • Thursdays 10 am - 6 pm
  • Fridays:  10 am - 5 pm
  • Saturdays 9 am - 5 pm
  • Still closed on Sunday & Monday.

Tuesday evening open knitting will go back to our regular 6:30 to 9:00.

For many of you, fall is the start of knitting season (and for some of us, every season is knitting season.  We're just obsessive like that.  ;)  We've got some fun things coming up and in the works.  I'm still working on putting together some classes,  but why not join us for Knittervention or an Open Knitting in the meantime?  We've also got a Saturday workshop coming up to get you started on the gorgeous Spectra (see below).

Just a teaser on this:  the recent competition at the State Fair has put us in the mood for a contest...how fun does that sound?!  I'm putting together the rules, so watch for it in a mid-month email.  It should be pretty fun!

One more really, really short notice announcement:  We have a couple of open spots in Nancy Lindberg's Tuesday afternoon class.  The thing is, it starts tomorrow, from 1:00 - 3:00, and it runs for six weeks.  Details are below.  If you're interested, call me right away in the morning (I open at 10), or shoot me an email.  Her classes are very popular and you'll learn a ton, so don't miss out on this opportunity!
Fall Yarn Tastings!

Back by popular demand!  What is a yarn tasting?  Think wine tasting, but there's no wine...there's yarn!  It's a fun way to sample some new yarns, find out what you like, maybe what you don't like, and maybe what you love!  It's another excuse to enjoy the company of other knitters while testing out some of our new fall yarns.  You'll get samples of at least 10 yarns along with some other goodies.  You'll snack, chat, and swatch.  It's a really fun way to spend an evening!  We've got several tastings planned, but seating is limited, so sign up soon.  If you have a group of friends that would like to do a private tasting, give me a call (minimum of 6, maximum of 10).

When:

  • Thursday Sept 22  -or-
  • Friday Sept 30th -or-
  • Thursday Oct 13th -or-
  • Friday Oct 28th

Time:  6:30 - 9:00

Cost:  $20

What to bring:  Knitting needles; you'll be sampling  yarns from lace weight up to chunky, so the suggested needles range from US1 to 11-ish.  So, bring the needles you have, but don't worry if you don't have every size - there will be loaner needles available.

How to sign up:  Seating is limited, so you need to register ahead of time by calling 763-780-2465, or you can stop in the shop.  Payment in full guarantees your spot in the tasting - if you can't get to the shop before the event, you can hold your spot by calling with a credit card.

New Stuff

Ty-Dy Superkid from Knit One Crochet Too

A yummy blend of mohair, wool & nylon in a self-striping laceweight.  With 246 yards per 25 gram ball, you get a lot of bang with your dollar with this one.  Yum.

Petals Sock from Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street Collection

Inspired by the softness of fresh petals, Petals Sock is a blend of fine merino and angora, with nylon for strength - a great combination for super soft and warm socks.  I've got it available in 9 tonal self-patterning colors.  And don't forget:  sock yarn isn't just for socks, especially when it's this cushy!  See what Ravelers are doing with it here:  Ravelry Link

Sock Donegal from Handpainted Knitting Yarns

A lovely, squishy handpainted tweed sock yarn.  It's a blend of merino wool and nylon with flecks of Donegal - that's what gives it the tweediness.  A generous 436 yards in each hank, it takes just one to make a good-sized pair of socks.  Lots of colors to choose from - no two skeins are alike.

Alpaca Handknitting DK from Kraemer Yarns

The blend of 70% Alpaca and 30% Merino gives this yarn the soft luxury of alpaca with the stability (and softness) of merino wool.  One very cool thing about this one is that the Alpaca fiber comes from the North American Alpaca Coop, and it's spun in Nazareth, PA.  Available in four natural colors - I do now have the fourth color available (a lovely natural cream), it just wasn't quite here when I snapped the photos.  Want some ideas of what to do with it?  Check out Kraemer's free patterns written specifically for it:  Kraemer Yarns.

Shepherd's Own from Fibra Natura

Another natural, undyed yarn, but this time it's 100% wool and it's worsted weight.  This is my favorite type of yarn:  slightly "crunchy", very earthy and natural.  I've got seven colors available, ranging from a soft cream to a deep brown in both solids and marls.  Check out what Ravelers have knit with it here:  Ravelry Link

Aspen from Fibra Natura

Superwash merino provides warmth, and just a touch of cotton (25%) provides breathability in this soft, variegated yarn.  What makes it even better is that it's machine washable - great from kids and adults alike!  I knit a Baby Tunic with it (below), but see what Ravelers are doing with it here:  Ravelry Link.

Geologee from Knit One Crochet Too

A soft, cushy blend of 55% wool and 45% acrylic, and when you knit with this slightly thick & thin yarn, thin color stripes appear like magic!  Great yardage of 120 yards per ball; worsted weight.  Check out what Ravelers are knitting with it here:  Ravelry Link.

Spectra!

Spectra is a simple, lightweight scarf featuring two fingering weight yarns.  Short row shaping creates a dramatically curved edge that coils and playfully drapes.  Basic intarsia technique entwines two strands of yarn, creating seamless wedges that resemble a rainbow or colorwheel.  You won't want to stop knitting as the colors unfold!  (from the pattern)

In this one-session class, Kerri will help you get started on this lovely scarf.   It really is gorgeous;  see some examples here:  Ravelry Link.

This is a great option if you want to take a class with a friend, but you knit at different levels. Come to just one class or come every week - knitter's choice.

Instructor: Kelly

Knittervention!

This month's Knittervention! will be September 16th.  Knittervention is our once-a-month, Friday-night-potluck-get-together.  For the whole scoop, click here

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too.  "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either. ;)

Open Knitting & Crochet

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required - just show up.  We have three times a week you can join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 4:30
  • Saturdays, 9:00 - noon

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For more dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice, Knit Along with Ann or The Workshop classes.  Details one these classes can be found here.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
