News from Double Ewe

August 18, 2011

It's still summer, but fall is in the air here at the shop.  Lots of new stuff is arriving and the knitting bug has bitten many of you.  Time to pick out a fresh project for fall.  In this mid-month issue, I'll share some of the new things, mostly from Plymouth, but there are more to come!

Oh, and a quick reminder:  Knittervention! is tomorrow night...Friday August 19th, 6:30 - 10:00.  Be there.

New Stuff

Bazinga from Plymouth

Quick knitting, thick & thin, self striping wool/acrylic blend with a super cute name.  How fun is that?!  Great for quick gifts or something just for you.  I've written a couple of free patterns with Bazinga - a cowl and some mitts.  Read further for more info.

 ---------------------------------------------

Galway Chunky from Plymouth

This plain vanilla yarn is so much more than plain.  This is the chunky version of Galway, one of our favorite basics here at Double Ewe.  100% wool and very versatile, use it for hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, and it also felts very well.  Today I'm showing you the creamy white
(you know...vanilla), but I've got it in nine more colors, and I'll be adding more as we go.

-----------------------------------------------

DeAire from Plymouth

You've got to squish this one.  Really.  It's 100% fine merino wool in a "chain" construction.  What this does for you is make a super chunky yarn that knits up very quickly but makes a fabric that is as light as air.  Yum.  The mittens below?  They took me just a couple of hours.  Quick.

---------------------------------------------

Baby Alpaca Brush from Plymouth

Gorgeous and soft baby alpaca in a lovely brushed yarn.  This one knits at a gauge of about 3 1/2 stitches per inch.  It has a nice, fuzzy look like some of the mohair yarns, but much softer, no itch.

---------------------------------------------

DK Merino Superwash from Plymouth

Of all the new yarns for the season, this one is probably my favorite.  It's a high-twist, 100% merino wool and it's machine washable.  The high twist makes it sproingy and durable, and the wool makes it nice and warm. This is just a few of the colors - I've got thirteen altogether.   If you read on, you'll see a free pattern for a slouch hat I've written - knit one up!

--------------------------------------------

Swing Hooks from Addi

These cool-looking hooks were designed to be ultra comfortable.  They're made of two different plastics - one colorful and soft, the other white and firm.  The two balance eachother perfectly for just the right amount of flexibility.  That's one swingin' hook!

Fiber Art Almanac 2012

The 2012 Fiber Art Almanac has arrived, and I think you'll love it even more than the last one!  This year's almanac features beautiful photography and stories of some inspiring fiber artists and their work, as did last year's Almanac.  However, the 2012 Almanac also includes six delightful, easy to knit patterns - three scarves, a cowl, a shawl, and even some cute bookworms!  What's even better, is the price has actually come down.  How much more fun can a planner get?!

Fresh Off The Needles

Davian's Wallaby

Pattern:  The Wonderful Wallaby by Cottage Creations

Yarn:  Malabrigo Rio (100% superwash merino wool)

Comments:  These three colors of Rio had been haunting me for a while...they are so cheerful!  I just had to knit something for my granddaughter.  The Wallaby pattern only goes down to a size 2, and Davian isn't quite there yet, so with some quick calculations, I figured that if I knit the size two at Rio's tighter gauge, it would actually end up closer to a 12 - 18 month size.  It worked out perfectly, as you can see at the end of this newsletter.  Yay!

The Scarf My Mom Knit

Yarn:  Blick Fang

PatternBlick Fang Bandanarama

Comments:  Earlier this  month, I introduced you to Blick Fang, a soft, slubby merino yarn.  Shortly after it arrived, my Mom knit up this scarf for me to display in the shop (thanks, Mom!).  Shortly after that, the Blick Fang started flying out of the shop.  Last time I told you "Blick Fang" translates to "eye catching"...see what I mean?  I've reordered, and my new, bigger shipment should be arriving tomorrow.

This issues free patterns feature two of the new yarns from Plymouth:  Bazinga and DK Merino Superwash.

Molly's Hat

I really like the slouchy hats - I think they're very flattering, and they don't smoosh your hair so much.  So I made another one.  :)

Needles:  16" Circular needles sizes 4 and 6, double pointed needles size 6

Knittervention!

This month's Knittervention! is August 19th.  Knittervention is our once-a-month, Friday-night-potluck-get-together.  For the whole scoop, click here

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too.  "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either. ;)

Open Knitting & Crochet

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required - just show up.  We have three times a week you can join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 5:00 - 8:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 4:30
  • Saturdays, 9:00 - noon

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
