News from Double Ewe
June 2011

Double Ewe will be closed from Sunday, May 29th - Monday, June 6th.  It's time for a little summer break - I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  Please see the holiday weekend schedule below for more information.

Whew, what a month May has been!  So far we've had just a taste of the summer to come, but some days have felt more like October!  We have some important things to mention below:  WWKIP Day 2011, our Memorial Day Weekend Schedule and upcoming vacation break , and a reminder of our Spring/Summer Hours, plus more, so be sure to read on.

On the personal front, we had some ups, downs, and then ups again through May.  Early in the month, we celebrated my granddaughter Davian's first birthday.  What a fun time that was!  We had a fun weekend down in Rochester with Davian, my son and daughter-in-law, and lots of other friends and family.  It was a blast for all of us, especially the birthday girl.

Then, later in the month, early one Tuesday morning, my father had a stroke.  Boy, that was scary.  In a nutshell, he spent about 4 days at Unity Hospital, then another 7 or so days in Rehab at United in St. Paul, and he was discharged last Friday.  Yay!  We're all very pleased (and relieved!) with his recovery.

Spring/Summer Hours

Running a yarn shop is a lot of fun, but it's a lot of work, too.  So, it's time for me to take a little break.  Double Ewe will be closed the week of Memorial Day...that's next week, not this week.   We will be open all this week as usual, so there's still time to get a new project for your long weekend!

World Wide Knit In Public Day

Who: You!

What:  Double Ewe's annual World Wide Knit in Public Day Celebration

Where:  On the sidewalk in front of the shop

When:  Saturday, June 11th, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm

Why:  For fun!  We'll be gathering on the sidewalk in front of the shop, so there will be plenty of shade.  It's fun to see the reactions we get from people passing by.  We knit, talk, laugh, and snack.  To make it even more fun, there will be prize drawings, too.  How fun is that?!

What to bring:  A lawn chair, your current project, sunscreen (if you choose to sit in the sun).  I'll be providing beverages and snacks.  If you'd like to bring a snack to share with the group, you're more than welcome to, but it's certainly  not required.

The background:  WWKIP day is a day when knitters get together and knit right out in public, right in front of non-knitters.  If you want to read about the origins of WWKIP Day, you can visit the website that started it all

New Stuff
No new yarns to share with you this month (...but just you wait!), but I have something to tell you about that's a perfect addition to your knitting bag.  Lavishea  is a lotion bar made of shea butter and soy  - you just rub it on your hands, and the heat of your body melts the lotion onto your skin where it's quickly absorbed with no greasy residue.  It comes in nine scents plus unscented, and I have them all available at the shop.

Fresh Off the Needles

Yarn:  Regia Extra Twist Merino

Pattern:  None, really. They're my standard 60 stitch cuff-down socks.

Needle:  Size 1

Comments: Early in the morning on May 10th, I stopped by the shop to put a sign on the door, "Closed for Family Emergency".  This was the morning that my father had the stroke I mentioned above.  I knew I'd be spending the next couple days at the hospital, and I knew I'd need something to do with my hands; it had to be something I didn't need to think about, so I grabbed a skein of sock yarn and some needles and headed out.  It's been a long time since I've knitted a complete pair of socks (the key word here is "complete"), and I'd forgotten how comforting it can be.

Yarn:  Mauch Chunky from Kraemer yarns - 100% wool

PatternArrowhead Poncho (a free pattern available from Kraemer yarns.  They have a lot of free patterns on their website - check it out.)

Needle: US 10 1/2

Comments:  May is kind of an odd time of year to knit a poncho out of a chunky wool, but I like knitting with a good wooly-wool any time of year.  I love cables, and with the chunky yarn, this was a fun, quick project for me.  The pattern has two sizes, and I made the smaller of the two.  It's a simple design with no shaping, this would be a great project for a newer knitter.

Classes

For our current classes, please visit our website

Workshop Style Classes

We have four workshop-style classes running this summer. In these classes, each student works at their own level on any project they'd like, and we're there to help if you get stuck or to teach you a new technique.  You can see the details on our website linked above.  These are all "pay as you go" type classes, meaning you only pay for the sessions you attend - perfect for the summer months!  Also, they are ongoing classes, with no start or end date - jump in whenever you like.  The times are:

Knitter's Choice with Judy: Tuesday mornings, 10:30 - 12:30

The Workshop with Kelly:  Wednesday mornings 10:30 - 12:30

Knit Along with Ann:  Wednesday afternoons, 1:30 - 3:30

Knitter's Choice with Kelly:  Thursday afternoons, 4:00 - 6:00

Knittervention! in June

June's Knittervention! will be on June 17th.   Knittervention is our once-a-month, Friday night potluck get together.  For the whole scoop, click here

Oh, and even though we call it Knittervention, of course crocheters are welcome, too!  "Crochetervention" just sounded funny, and "Friday Night Hookers"...well...that doesn't sound right either.  ;)

Open Knitting & Crochet

Join us for a fun social time while working on whatever you want.  No registration required - just show up.  We have three times a week you can join us:

  • Tuesday evenings, 5:00 - 8:00
  • Friday afternoons, 1:30 - 4:30
  • Saturdays, 9:00 - noon

Please note:  Open Knitting is not a class.  Although I'm always happy to answer questions as time permits, sometimes it gets a bit hectic.  For more dedicated help, consider coming to one of our Knitter's Choice, Knit Along with Ann or The Workshop classes.  Details one these classes can be found here.

That's all for now, folks!  Once again, I'd like to thank you all for supporting your local yarn shop.
