News from Double Ewe April 10 2011 - The New Stuff |
Well, hey there folks! Didja miss me? I've been on a little hiatus from the newsletter...an unplanned hiatus. Basically time just got away from me. It's been about two months since I've written to you, and I have lots to share. To keep this newsletter from being pages and pages long, I thought I'd break it up into smaller, more frequent newsletters, at least until I'm caught up. Today, I want to focus on some of the new things that have arrived in the shop this spring. I've arranged the list similar to how I've arranged the shop: by weight or gauge. We'll start with the bigger gauge/thicker yarns, and we'll work our way down to the lace yarns plus some other new things. What's going on at Double Ewe these days? Sit tight...I'll cover that in my next newsletter, but don't worry...it'll be coming soon. Happy spring! |

The Chunkies
Chunky yarns typically knit up at a gauge of about 3 to 3 1/2 stitches per inch. Also included in the chunkies are ribbon & novelty yarns, although they can be worked up at a variety of gauges.
Silk Gelato by Lantern Moon
100% silk, this ribbon yarn features a lustrous sheen and antique look. Silk Gelato is silk taffeta which is hand cut and tied every two yards into a continuous strip. The hand tied knots and loosely frayed raw edges give it a vintage, romantic look. It's available in full scoops of 72 yards, or mini scoops of 10 yards, perfect for embellishments. I have a free pattern available when you purchase the full scoop for a lovely scarf. Silk Gelato will be available for a limited time, so don't hesitate too long with this one.

Mauch Chunky from Kraemer Yarns
Another yarn from one of my favorite yarn manufacturers: Kraemer Yarns. Located in Nazareth, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, they spin many varieties of yarn from natural and synthetic fibers. I love working with them, and last summer I added five of their yarns to my "bag of tricks", and this month, I've added three more. Yay for U.S. mills!
Mauch Chunky is a single-ply yarn made of 60% New Zealand wool and 40% domestic wool. I've started with eight fun, heathered colors, but it comes in a total of 56 different colors, so you can expect to see more colors in the shop down the road a bit. Mauch Chunky was created with felters in mind; it felts beautifully and easily. But it certainly isn't limited to felted items, garments made from Mauch Chunky are warm and perfect for winter weather. Oh, do you know how to pronounce "Mauch"? It rhymes with "sock". The Worsteds
Worsted weight is probably the most commonly used type of yarn, and it knits up from about 4 to 5 stitches per inch.
Eco Cloud from Cascade Yarns
Eco Cloud is a squishy, yummy blend of natural alpaca & merino. Processed with no chemicals, it's available in nine natural, undyed colors. It has a braided construction (that's the part that makes it squishy), and it's a dream to knit with. It would make an awesome sweater, or maybe a warm & cozy cowl. A free pattern for the Slanty Cowl shown in the photo is available at the shop.

Misti Alpaca Worsted from Misti Alpaca
Misti Worsted isn't new to the shop, but it's a yarn that's always been one of my favorites, so I wanted to mention it again, especially since we've recently added six new vibrant, fun colors. Super soft, super warm, it's great for cold weather accessories, yet so soft and luscious you'll want to knit with it all year long.
Free patterns: Convertible Cowl, Cabled Thumb Mitts, Double Color Hat, Mitt, Scarf Set (crochet!)

Natuarlly Nazareth
Another yarn from Kraemer, Naturally Nazareth is a worsted weight yarn made of 100% domestic wool. A versatile yarn with great stitch definition, it is study and warm, perfect for anything from a cozy winter sweater, to mittens, hats, scarves, pillows, and even stuffed animals. Like Mauch Chunky, it was designed with felters in mind - try it for your favorite felted project. To start, I've brought in 6 variegated colorways - something I was missing in a feltable yarn. I used it to make these super cute felted flip flops. The pattern, by Kalamazoo Knits, is available in the shop, and comes in adults, kids, and baby sizes. O-Wool Balance from Tunney Wool Company
Balance is a 50/50 blend of certified organic wool and organic cotton, with a subtle tweedy, earthy look and a soft hand. With the flexibility of wool and the coolness of cotton, it's perfect for light sweaters, wraps, and clothing for children. If you're interested in how "certified organic" applies to yarn, you can read about it on O-Wool.com. The Aethercopter scarf shown here was a really fun to knit and super cute to wear.

Nautika from Knit One Crochet Too
Nautika is a new yarn from Knit One Crochet Too, and it's a microfiber/nylon blend. It's soft, has a great sheen, and fantastic stitch definition. Nice for adult garments, but equally nice for babies and children, since it's machine wash and dry. I really enjoyed working with Nautika when I knit up the market bag.

The DK's
DK yarn falls somwhere between worsted and sport weight yarn, and it knits up to about 5 1/2 stitches per inch. It's nice for lighterweight garments & accessories for both adults and children.
Everlasting DK from Dream in Color
A soft, 100% superwash merino wool, Everlasting is dyed with a unique technique giving it intense colors with a shadowy effect. Truly, the photos do not do it justice; it's just striking. Spun and hand dyed in the USA.

Tatamy DK from Kraemer Yarns
One more new yarn from Kraemer. Tatamy, previously known as Little Lehigh, is a D.K. weight cotton and acrylic blend, designed with babies and children in mind. But it works equally well for adults - garments made with it can be well loved and easily cared for. Made in the U.S.A.

Batika by Schoeller+Stahl
You might have noticed Batika in the shop - I brought it into the shop last summer when it was a brand new yarn. This season they've added a bunch of new colors, so I greatly increased my color selection. Batika has fabulous drape, and gorgeous self-patterning colors. 100% plied microfiber and machine washable. You can see samples of all the colors here. A free pattern for the Gathered Scarf as shown in the photo is available at the shop.

The Fingerings
Fingering weight yarn works up at a range of 7 - 8 stitches per inch. It's also referred to as "Sock Yarn", but it's definately not just for socks. It's also used for baby items, shawls, scarves, gloves, sweaters...the list goes on and on. It's especially nice for light weight, warm weather projects.
Sausalito from Crystal Palace Yarns
A fun new addition to Crystal Palace's self-striping family of yarns: a velvety soft blend of superwash merino & nylon, and it knits nicely at a sport-to-fingering weight gauge. Sausalito is machine washable (cool & gentle in a lingerie bag, thank-you-very-much), perfect for hats, gloves, socks, scarves, and more.

Tonos Carnaval from Misti Alpaca
Carnaval is a blend of superfine alpaca, fine merino wool, silk and nylon - super soft, resilient and durable in a fingering weight with tone-on-tone colorways. Just gorgeous. This is the same blend and weight as Misti's Handpaint Sock Yarn.

Denali, Yukon, Chugiak and St. Elias from Pagewood Farm
While they're not new to the shop, it's been a while since I've had such a big pile of Pagewood yarns, so I thought I'd mention them again. They are variety of blends: 100% merino with a high twist, a merino/nylon blend, a merino/bamboo blend, and a Bluefaced Leicester/nylon blend as well. Pagewood yarns are hand dyed in small batches in the USA, and they're just beautiful.

The Lace Weights
Lace weight yarn is very fine, and can be knit at a variety of gauges and on a variety of needles sizes.
Consonance from Jojoland
A blend of silk and cashmere in a lace weight, Consonance came onto my radar when a knitter was planning an heirloom wedding shawl. One knitter from Ravelry described it as: "This yarn is like knitting with a cloud of whipped butter." I have it available in the colors shown, as well as a creamy white...but creamy white doesn't photograph well, so I didn't include it in the photo.

Legacy Lace by Brown Sheep
This is Brown Sheep's newest yarn, a very fine blend of soft superwash wool and a bit nylon. The nylon gives a durability to the fine yarn that isn't found in most lace weight yarn. It comes in generous 430 yard skeins and has a very budget friendly price - you can really get a lot of bang out of your yarn dollar with this one. Oh, and Brown Sheep has recently revamped their website, and I love it. If you want to learn more about their history and their yarns, visit Brownsheep.com.

The Kits
Knit One Crochet Too has put together some great kits for some fun projects - everything you need is in the kit, except the needles.
Guinevere from from Knit One Crochet Too
Guinevere is a lovely scarf/shawl (Scawl? Sharf?), which combines a luxurous baby mohair/silk laceweight yarn and a worsted thick/thin variegated yarn. It can be worn several different ways, which are shown on the instructions.

Painted Diamonds Bag from Knit One Crochet Too
The Painted Diamonds bag is constructed in mitered squares and it's knit all in one piece - no sewing required. A fun, sort of additive project. It uses a beautiful self-pattern wool yarn. We will be featuring the Painted Diamonds bag in a casual Knit Along in the near future - details will be in our next newsletter.
