Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
A few months ago in the midst of a conversation with Philip Gerrie, who facilitates Simply Sandwiches (a volunteer group that gathers weekly at St. Cyprian's to make sandwiches for 200 people) I was invited to go on a new adventure. As we chatted, Philip got a phone call, an emergency call of a sort, to go pick up some bees. Philip is a beekeeper and one of the people that receive calls from the city when a group of bees have started to swarm in someone's backyard, parking lot or drive way. He invited me to join him on a drive across the city to witness this important part of his life. I was quite amazed and surprised by the calm, non-anxious way that this wise beekeeper gently assisted these buzzing creatures into a box, so that later he could take them to the beehive of a friend. I thought about Philip and those swarming bees when I read this quote this morning by Jon Kabat-Zinn,
What seems to be happening at the moment is never the full story of what is really going on. For the honey bee, it is the honey that is important. But the bee is at the same time nature's vehicle for carrying out cross-pollination for the flowers. Interconnectedness is a fundamental principle of nature. Nothing is isolated. Each event connects with others. Things are constantly unfolding on different levels. It's for us to perceive the warp and woof of the Oneness of All as best we can and learn to follow our own threads through the tapestry of life with authenticity and resolve.
from Wherever You Go There You Are
St. Cyprian's & Cyprian's arc is an eclectic mix of people (recently, I've been appreciating a cable networks tagline - Characters Welcome & oh how much that applies to us!) who together seek to perceive the warp and woof of the Oneness of All as best we can and we are learning to follow our own threads through the tapestry of life with authenticity and resolve . Humans and bees are very different of course --- however it is amazing how often bees and honey are used as metaphors in our sacred scriptures (i.e. Wisdom, Ezekiel) and church history (John the Baptist, Bernard de Clairvaux, Hildegard von Bingen). Perhaps the queen bee is the Spirit of Wisdom that moves within all of us and helps each of us find our way.
See you soon at Turk & Lyon!
Peace,
Will
P.S. Even Taylor who will be performing on Friday night at St. Cyprian's (as part of our new grant supported free programming) wrote a song called "Honeycomb Heart" she sang it in the sanctuary earlier this year.
