Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

The following map was posted a little while ago on Facebook --- making clear that this weekend in the city of St. Francis there will be a lot of wonderful and exciting activities. After our regular Sunday morning services, 9 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. --- some of us at St. Cyprian's will head down to the panhandle park to offer bicycle & pet blessings. We are doing this not because we are trying to win new church members, or "get our name out there",  but because we aim to be part of our local vibrant urban landscape. We are doing this also in celebration of the blessed Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone, aka St. Francis of Assisi our city's namesake whose Feast day is today (October 4) but is commemorated in churches around the world this coming Sunday.

Francis is called the patron saint of ecology for his special care for animals and poetic celebration of creation in his Canticle of the Sun. In addition to his grateful heart for the earth, I am drawn to Francis because of his embrace of vulnerability, practice of nonviolence and embodiment of the teachings of Jesus. I love that the inventor of nativity pageants also met face-to-face during the crusades with a leading Muslim, the Sultan, Melek-el-Kamel.

Image above from interior of San Damiano Church where Francis heard Christ speak to him saying,
"Francis, don't you see my house is crumbling apart?
Go, then, and restore it!"

The influential author and thinker Parker Palmer wrote a book a number of years ago called 'Let Your Life Speak." Francis' life spoke in the 1200s, and that life is still speaking to us in the 21st. As we San Franciscans enjoy the busy weekend ahead may we take a moment to remember the vulnerable, loving, playful, creative, and strange Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone. If you happen to be bicycling or wandering through the Panhandle on Sunday between 11:30 and 2 p.m., swing by Fell & Masonic and we'll say a prayer and sprinkle some holy water on your bike or cat in honor of St. Francis. May we like him, learn to let our life speak.

See you soon at Turk & Lyon!

Peace,

Will
