Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's, I have just returned from an Episcopal Diocese of California Clergy Retreat. I had many good conversations with colleagues from around the Bay Area each serving very different communities and congregations, neighborhoods and organizations. Some of the people I spent time with are just entering this work, or are new to the area, some have been serving for many years in very challenging circumstances. I was in a small group with the inspiring The Reverend Dr. Katherine L. Ward who is a retired priest and Rector Emeritus of the St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Oakland. Every so often whether in the small group or in one-on-one conversation she would share from memory a wise quote or poem that seemed to spring up from deep within her. One poem she shared is Langston Hughes' "Mother to Son": Well, son, I'll tell you: Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor -- Bare. But all the time I'se been a-climbin' on, And reachin' landin's, And turnin' corners, And sometimes goin' in the dark Where there ain't been no light. So boy, don't you turn back. Don't you set down on the steps 'Cause you finds it's kinder hard. Don't you fall now -- For I'se still goin', honey, I'se still climbin', And life for me ain't been no crystal stair. See you soon at Turk & Lyon! Peace,

Thank you Michael Helquist | Michael Helquist (center) with St. Cyprian's congregation member Robyn Amos and celebrated African Guitarist Vieux Farka Tour |
Michael Helquist, volunteer St. Cyprian's Director of Community Initiatives & Cyprian's Center Director is stepping away from Turk & Lyon to focus on personal projects and interests effective October 1.
St. Cyprian's Senior Warden Bruno Peguese and Junior Warden & Advisory Council Chair, Jarie Bolander praised Michael's work and assured congregation members and the wider neighborhood community that Cyprian's Center's objectives will continue. Bruno stated, "We regret that Michael is leaving especially at such an exciting time of growth in our life, with Michael's incredible skills and community activism he has really been one of the fibers that has helped to weave this community effort, strengthening the church and unifying the community. St. Cyprian's has learned so much from Michael and we are excited to continue to grow as result of his energetic leadership."
St. Cyprian's Vicar Will Scott, thanked Michael & his partner Dale Danley, "St. Cyprian's has been greatly blessed by these community leaders, by their unique ability to bring people together from all walks of life for the common good. For nearly 90 years, St. Cyprian's has been striving to serve God and our neighbors, and this couple has been an important part of our journey these past two years. Much like our congregation's forebears of the 20th century amidst sweeping societal changes Michael & Dale have with elbow grease and determination helped create a shared space for the 21st century. We are grateful for them, and will miss them."
Michael was drawn to St. Cyprian's vision of becoming a shared community space, and he added his passion and commitment to help carry it forward and expand its reach. After a year of planning and preparation with St. Cyprian's community, Michael helped launch earlier this year Cyprian's arc - a center for the arts, resilience and community and served as Director.
St. Cyprian's has been fortunate to benefit from the social networks that Michael, his partner, Dale, and other long-time neighborhood leaders have brought to our operations at Turk and Lyon. Utilizing those networks and 15 years' experience of organizing in the neighborhood, Michael recruited numerous volunteers and developed a comprehensive space use process.
Michael's first engagement with St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church was in the 1990s as part of a tree planting initiative in the neighborhood. Michael became re-acquainted and engaged following a visit by St. Cyprian's clergy to a Bike the Block event he organized in the neighborhood in September of 2009. In time, Michael stepped up to assist St. Cyprian's with a number of major projects from preparing for the San Francisco Live Arts music series which came to Turk & Lyon in Winter 2011, to coordinating a major deferred maintenance issue (the Turk & Lyon Street Wall & Tower Repair) to beautifying the exterior with the Green Turk & Lyon Street sidewalk gardens.
Everyone at St. Cyprian's and throughout the neighborhood, is deeply grateful for Michael's hard work, commitment and creativity. We wish Michael all the best in the creative work that lies ahead for him.
Essential to the center's life are our Advisory Council, University of San Francisco faculty and students, partnerships with the North of the Panhandle Neighborhood Association & The Wigg Party, program associate Allison Schaub, project manager The Reverend Eric Metoyer, and many neighborhood volunteers, especially graphic designer Kevin Barnard, and church member Stephen Prutsman. Thanks to Michael Helquist's strong organizational groundwork, Cyprian's Center is positioned to have a long and vibrant life at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church. In November, we will honor Michael's contribution to our common life at a special volunteer celebration.
For new space use requests please contact Cyprian's Events Coordinator Allison Schaub events@cyprians.org.

The Shook Twins Laurie and Katelyn are twin sisters from Idaho who reside currently in Portland and have been tearing it up lately on the Pacific Northwest music circuit. Their music is contemporary folk permeated with world music rhythms, singer-songwritery depth, literary aspirations, and pop playfulness. Their sound is witty, soulful, mischievous, and swinging all at the same time; and their stage show is a fast-paced juggling act of banjos, guitars, mandolins, a giant golden egg, djembe, altered vocal effects, beat boxing, and looping. They're able to mix traditional folk elements, such as passionate sibling harmonizing, with modern gadgetry and experimentation in seamless fashion thanks to their onstage exuberance, charm and rock-solid talent. http://www.shooktwins.com/
THE COUNTRY MOURNS The Country Mourns are Misisipi Mike Wolf and Jody Richardson. They play all original songs in a variety of Americana styles. Both Jody and Mike write and sing for the duo, with Jody handling the fiddle duties and Mike on the guitar. Misisipi Mike is a mainstay in the Bay Area Americana music scene, as the leader of Misisipi Rider, the Midnight Gamblers and countless other cherished local acts. Misisipi Mike Wolf was voted "Best Singer/Songwriter' of 2011 on the San Francisco Bay Guardian readers poll, and his songs have been featured on hit TV shows like "True Blood" (Hbo), "Justified" (FX) and "Big Love" (Showtime). ),Jody Richardson is a talented youngster who fiddles and sings with old school charm and conviction way beyond her years. http://www.facebook.com/TheCountryMourns
THE DIRT FLOOR BAND The Dirt Floor Band are 5 fellows from Mendocino who make a high-spirited brand of California gypsy bluegrass that appeals to dyed-in-the-wool Bill Monroe-loving traditionalists as well as dance-happy scene makers. On the surface the songs seem like up tempo hard-charging celebrations of everything carefree. Lyrically the songs aren't afraid to tackle a wide-range of emotions and the sides of the human condition. Dirt Floor Band songs aim to move you outside and in! http://thedirtfloorband.com/
