Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
This morning soon after I arrived at Turk & Lyon, Kristina Lacayo one of our summer interns and her brother showed up to begin preparation for tonight's Free Community Dinner. The bounty of ingredients they had picked up the day before gleaned from a local Farmers Market cried out for washing and chopping. As we cut cucumbers and onions, we talked about a number of activities going on in the neighborhood and the shared recognition that sometimes valuable time, energy and resources can be unintentionally misdirected towards breaking something down rather than building something up. But then again, it all depends on the recipe and what's attempting to be created ---- the cucumber salad we're serving tonight wouldn't be much good if the vegetable wasn't first cut up into edible pieces. But then if I've spent an hour cutting up cucumbers for a salad, and you want to use them for a soup & someone else is allergic to them all together --- we're going to have some issues.
Our immediate neighborhood known as the North Panhandle is a distinctive part of the unique District 5 which includes the Haight-Ashbury, Japantown, Fillmore, Alamo Square, parts of Hayes Valley and inner Sunset. Most everyone I meet who lives, works or passes through this area has strong opinions, impressions, tastes, passions, desires and/or ambitions for the center of the city of Francis. This is one of the beautiful aspects of living and working here. However, this often makes for tension, confusion, and frustration especially when you add in the enormous disparities in income, opportunity, education, and the broad range of cultural backgrounds, ages, political commitments, affinities and tactics. We all like the word "progressive" to describe what we're about, this Vicar especially --- but one person's progress can sometimes sadly turn out to be another person's nightmare.
All of us in D5 probably would do well to take a few more deep breaths and spend a few more hours at the Zen Center, Panhandle Park, Kabuki Springs, or any number of church sanctuaries or yoga studios to really think about the ways we spend our time, energy, creativity, energy and resources. What are we attempting to create together? Have you asked the other cooks in the kitchen to find out if they don't already have plans for those mushrooms, are you planning to steal them anyway? What about using the peppers instead, they may have a few bruises but nothing a little extra time and creative chopping skills couldn't fix.
See you soon at Turk and Lyon! Peace,

Thank you San Francisco Day School!
Many thanks to our North Panhandle neighbors and friends at SF Day School who arranged for St. Cyprian's Community Kitchen to receive two discarded items from their kitchen, a huge fridge and stainless steal worktable. Special thanks to Danny De Leon for thinking of us, and coordinating this contribution to our dream of a new space to share food and build community at Turk & Lyon.
