Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

This week I've been away from San Francisco visiting a dear college friend in Seattle recovering from surgery. My friend Renee & her Mom have been dreaming big dreams about a large piece of relatively vacant land near their small cabin in Hansville --- a rural community north of Seattle not far from Bainbridge Island. Their hope, shared by a number of others and now supported by Seattle Tilth is to develop the land into a non-profit organic farm. Renee and her mom are among the growing number of people particularly in the Pacific Northwest who call themselves "spiritual but not religious" & ever since college I have appreciated the deep and broad conversations we've shared, they respect my vocation and commitment to the church --- though they are at times I think baffled by the institution and its troubled history on so many matters, sexism, homophobia, imperialism, racism & xenophobia just to name a few. Hearing about their vision for the land though was inspiring, and learning about their struggles attempting to bring people together, develop a shared mission, and raise funds all seemed very familiar.

I also had the chance to stop by the Fremont Abbey home to the still relatively young church plant Church of the Apostles and the Fremont Arts Center. Like us, they are experiencing growing pains and we have much to learn from their successes and challenges. God has also blessed our congregation and center with a unique set of gifts and wisdom that I think will help strengthen and sustain our work for years to come.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to step away for a little while --- to get to know a new geography and urban landscape but look forward to returning on Friday to dig back into the exciting adventure we share Turk & Lyon.

See you soon at Turk and Lyon!

Peace,

Will
