Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
In the wake of the devastating events late last week in Colorado a conversation opened up on Episcopal Cafe about gun violence and how faith communities may best respond. I encourage you especially to take a look at this post by The Reverend Donald Schell, co-founder of St. Gregory's of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco written before the events of last week:
What would it take for us together to speak against the profitable business of manufacturing ready means for criminals and madmen to kill? What if we began to tell our stories and listen to others' stories? Could we find common voice with other people who count on the safety of churches, schools, stores and shopping malls, offices buildings, theaters, and the streets we walk on? Ultimately the cost of Columbine, of Texas Tower, of Virginia Tech, and of stories like mine and yours, stories of places we live, of friends and neighbors, stories of guns pointed at people we know and love, ultimately the cost is fear, not just fear of strangers but fear of any face-to-face community. On Sunday, we prayed for recent victims of gun violence including a young man shot in the mouth just a few blocks away from our church building, a brother of a participant in The Village Project. Yet another reason why the work we do at Turk & Lyon, cultivating a community where everyone matters is so important. Together with our diverse urban neighborhood, St. Cyprian's seeks to live by faith not fear --- with events like tonight's Free Dinner we're striving to nurture and nourish face-to-face community for good times and times when we're anxious, lonely, distraught and heartbroken. Faith communities have an important role in calling people to greater responsibility and care for the common good. We need to speak up about the senselessness of violence and the need to strengthen our nation's gun laws. Advocacy and activism need local communities like our own to help give testimony for the need for systemic change. In the coming weeks let us think together about ways we may partner with other faith communities and organizations that we may one day be called, "repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in"
Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. from the Book of Isaiah Chapter 58 See you soon at Turk and Lyon! Peace,
Will

St. Cyprian's got a "shout-out" in
The San Francisco Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay Named "Best Prayer for Unity"
A sanctuary that offers religion to some and is open to all, St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church genuinely lives by JC's should-be truism, "there are no outcasts and all are welcome." Volunteers from the church's congregation manage the Cyprian's Arc community center, which opens its doors wide as a music venue and meeting space for neighbors of every age, belief system, and background. Local activists, like those from the sustainability-driven Wigg Party, organize workshops and events within the St. Cyprian's public areas. And the 89-year-old church's efforts at community building, such as a recent oral history project, remind Panhandle neighbors that even - perhaps especially - in a rapidly changing community, they are connected at the roots of the 'hood.
Longtime member Willie Collie called yesterday to let us know that St. Cyprian's was in the newspaper. We're very grateful to be given this shout-out by The San Francisco Bay Guardian & to be part of such a vibrant, eclectic & diverse neighborhood. Thank you to whomever nominated St. Cyprian's & Cyprian's arc for this, we're honored. Also, thank you for the hard work of the St. Cyprian's lay leadership team (The Bishops Committee) & Cyprian's arc Advisory Council, to all our neighbors and friends nearby and far away who are showing up, helping out, saying prayers and giving generously of time, talent & treasure to help us keep those doors wide open for all.
