Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,

This weekend I had the opportunity to celebrate a colleagues' tenth anniversary as an ordained priest, as we talked about this moment in his vocational life, I thought about the commitments we made when we were ordained. The following line stuck out profoundly for me, particularly as our nation celebrated Independence Day,

"You are to love and serve the people among whom you work, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor."

In many ways this call is not for a priest alone, but for a "priestly" people, a congregation, any church anywhere or any one or group seeking to embody the good news. In my seven years serving the church, I have known priests that are really good at serving the young, strong and rich, and priests that are really good at serving the old, weak and poor --- but the line in the ordination liturgy says "alike." Also, I know old folks that are quite rich, and young folks that are quite weak --- but you get my point. Caring "alike" for all these folks is quite a challenge.

St. Cyprian's is a fantastic place and community to attempt to live into that call. Together we work hard to be a people of faith, action, & community for young, old, strong, weak, rich and poor. San Francisco provides us with a particularly rigorous challenge in that we are located in one of the most expensive cities on the planet to live yet according to Wikipedia, "the city is believed to have the highest number of homeless inhabitants per capita of any major U.S. city."

Yesterday, as Matt and I watched the fireworks over the Bay, I thought about a few poems that have inspired both my journey as an American and as a Christian. Each in some way echo the calling to be a peculiar people serving a unique purpose. One was shared online by a favorite seminary professor, the others I've held close for a long time.

USF Graduates Coordinate
Summer Programs

USF Graduates Coordinate Summer Programs We're very pleased to announce that three recent University of San Francisco graduates will join us at Turk and Lyon this summer to develop and coordinate events. From boosting our promotion, helping with community outreach, designing new kids programs and continuing the always-packed community dinners, Allison Schaub, Grace Rahn and Kristina Marie Lacayo are making our corner of the neighborhood buzz.

We hope you will get to know each of them. We profiled Kristina & Allison in our last issues, now learn more about Grace.

Hello cyprian community members and neighbors, my name is Grace Rahn and I am a recent graduate of USF with a degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in Fine Art. I first got involved with cyprians helping out with the Free Community Dinners as well as being a teacher's assistant to Kyle Brunel for the kids art classes hosted by cyprians.

I am overjoyed to be able to cultivate my passions for our environment, community building, and art through my work with cyprians. Recently I was asked to become program coordinator for one of cyprians new programs, Parents Night Out. I feel excited about this program because it provides parents with a more community-based childcare option. It is a great way for parents to take the night off and for kids to learn and play with peers their age at a fun night at cyprians.

I look forward to helping out with future community dinners, continuing to be Kyle's teacher's assistant, as well as planning future Parents Night Out events. Hope to see you and your family at cyprians this summer!
