Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members of St. Cyprian's,
Today, as I looked at my calendar, not only gazing at the busy summer ahead, but also at the past few months the word sabbath came bouncing into my consciousness. Then I discovered this powerful quote from Wayne Mueller,
Sabbath is not dependent upon our readiness to stop. We do not stop when we are finished. We do not stop when we complete our phone calls, finish our project, get through this stack of messages, or get out this report that is due tomorrow. We stop because it is time to stop.
Sabbath requires surrender. If we only stop when we are finished with all our work, we will never stop--because our work is never completely done. With every accomplishment there arises a new responsibility.
Every swept floor invites another sweeping, every child bathed invites another bathing. When all life moves in such cycles, what is ever finished?
The sun goes 'round, the moon goes 'round, the tides and seasons go 'round, people are born and die, and when are we finished? If we refuse rest until we are finished, we will never rest until we die.
Sabbath dissolves the artificial urgency of our days, because it liberates us from the need to be finished. from Sabbath, Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest
Yesterday, when visiting one of our beloved community elders, who is recovering from surgery, I thought about sabbath. As we talked I realized that we were having a very different conversation than when we hurriedly pass one another by on a Sunday morning, she setting up for coffee hour and I getting ready for worship. Yes, the setting was different, we were seated at her dining table in her
lovely home. The depth and breadth of the conversation was different, I think primarily because she was well rested, was in the midst of a period of slowing down and recuperating. I saw a different side of a person I thought I knew well. Who knows the lessons we would learn, not just as a community but as a nation, if we truly gave ourselves the space and time needed for true recreation.
Our ancient spiritual traditions seem to know that we humans need rest, recreation, and time for recuperation and reflection whether we think we need it or not. It is actually one of the 10 Commandments, yet it is probably the hardest to keep. May we find the balence we need both as individuals and a community so that we too may feel liberated from the need to be finished.
See you soon at Turk & Lyon!
Peace,
Will
